'86 from New Hampshire

Hey guys,

Just picked up my first 4runner. First truck actually "it's not a truck" i know. I'm coming over from bmw's, still have a few but they don't make a quality SUV type vehicle so... here i am. Picked up an 86 automatic with 126k from Boston, MA a few weeks ago. and by Boston I mean Dorchester (if any of you are in the area). It need some work, some detailing ect. It was red with brown interior, but was sprayed black. I looks ok at best but i will do my best to polish it up. My plans for it are basically just to clean it up, do the suspension over and maintain it. I'll be using it as a daily driver and will take it in the mountains, on snowboard trips and the occasional off-road venture. I'm going to use this thread as a log of my ownership of this car and will update it with work i do and adventures i may go on.

Few over all pictures

Wrong valve cover?

When i first bought it, it had a fairly consistent misfire. I did a full tune up and that seemed to take care of the problem. Having said that i do still feel a slight miss under light acceleration. Along with the tune up i did the valve cover gasket and did the valve clearances. I was surprised to see that it was extremely clean under the cover (no staining or build up what so ever.

Jet washed and glass beaded the cover and baffle

I painted it a metallic silver but do not like it at all.
While i was in there i checked the chain and guides. The chain has slack on the drivers side and the guide had some movement although it was intact and the mounting points were not broken. I'll plan to do this job in the next few weeks. probably towards the end of may.

Also picked up some black 8 hole wheels. not sure if they're American racing or ATX Mojave but man, are they heavy. Those are getting mounted up today with some bfg rugged terrain's. I will likely get new wheels at some point, but they will do for now.

welcome!

decent runner, believe i saw it on c-list for a while. body looks to be in good, solid condition.

valve cover is indeed incorrect. it is for the carbureted 22r.

read RAD4runner's build thread on this site and on yotatech for really good information about the electrical system and some improvements to do.

thanks guys!
wallytoo I'll check out that thread. where in new hampshire are you from?

Also turns out the mojave wheels I bought have the wrong hub size, so I'm going to have to find some new 16" wheels

wallytoo that's a nice area. i make it up that way for hiking and snowboarding a few times a year. I'm from hollis (flat lander, i know ;) ) I took a quick glance at your thread and saw something about a wiring problem that affects the headlights. I'll have to look into that because my high beams have a problem where they only turn on when i hold the lever back. when i push it forward the lights shut off.

Also my fuel level is dead, is that a common problem too?
Rusted the body is surprisingly clean. i can't find any signs of bondo anywhere and the only rot is a 2 inch square on the underside of the tailgate.

I found new wheels, 16" split 3 spokes off of a 3rd gen (can someone confirm the hubs will fit). I see pictures of them on our trucks but i don't know if there were variations of the same wheel offered.

your dimmer switch can be made to operate. do the rewire that RAD suggests, along with what i did.

fuel guage issue is common, and a little more difficult, but can be done.

same with the starter wiring. do it. you probably do not have the factory relay.

Got the new to me 3rd gen wheels mounted up today (ft. my girlfriend's e30). I actually like the oe wheels a lot. Even more so than the black 8 hole wheels I had originally intended on mounting.

I like the new wheels!..., I almost want with those too, but bought stock SR5 alloys instead last minute.

Thanks for the comments guys.
Hyde802 thanks for the link. I'll see if I can ID the engine when i do the timing chain.

I stopped at the local scrap yard today and pulled a pair of front seatbelts off a '92. They are gray and look out of place but I didn't feel safe with my kids in just lap belts. These will do for now. I may grab a set of brown one from another toyota or I may get new ones from seatbelt planet as I have seen others here had good luck with them. Still not sure what my plans are interior wise either.

do a search on this site for replacing the rear belts. i used the rear belts from my '95 subaru legacy, and they fit, including the center lap belt. the extension bracket on the subaru, that attaches to the roof/pillar, has to be ground off, but it's simple to do. no cutting or sewing of the belt web material needed.

Looking for some advise when it comes to doing the timing chain and guides. I'm about to order the kit from engbldr with the waterpump, oil pump and timing cover. Not bad for 155$ considering just an oil pump for my e21 is 450$. My question is should I do the head gasket while I'm in there? (Yes I know "if it ain't broke don't fix it) but this seems like 90% of a head gasket job and I'd be able to totally rebuild the head. I have access to a matching shop and could have the head cleaned and decked for almost nothing. Not to mention I would grind that nasty lip off the inside of the ports. What do you guys think? Is it worth turning the weekend job into a 2 weekend job plus the maybe 200 $ for extra parts and machine work?

Head gasket is your call. If you decide to do it be very very careful if you decide to deck the head. If it's warped and needs to be decked it's sometimes better to just get a new head. Call engnbldr and ask him about decking heads. He can give you some very good advice. If you deck it much at all you will probably need to do an adjustable timing gear. Also if you going to do a head gasket then you should probably look at a cam as well. Probably the best performance improvement for the $$$. At that point look at a complete head with new cam from engnbldr. I started with that and ended up doing a full rebuild after looking at my bottom end.

Just my opinion. Let us know what you decide on. Keep up the good work

Quick update. I did the "zuk mod" using 3rd gen moog replacement springs.

Haven't done much driving with them yet and I'm sure they still have some settling to do. very happy with it so far.

Aslo picked up the 4 piece front end kit from engnbldr and plan to do the timing chain next weekend. I've decided not to bother with a headgasket job as its not needed and this is supposed to be my budget dd.
