86 Timing how to ?

I was wondering what the best way to time my 86 4runner was? I keep feeling like it's off and I'm just not pulling the power I used to before my engine swap.

You could always advance the timing bit by bit until it starts pinging, then back it up a little.

You need a timing light to check/adjust your timing.

I dont think your loss of power is timing related. I would check compression and to a a tune up (ie, plugs, wires, cap rotor, fuel filter, air filter)

I have a timing light that I've used a couple times. I did the full tune up as soon as I installed the engine along with all new fluids ect. Is there somewhere I need to jump it to like in the V6?

Oh yes you do! I assumed you were already aware of that so I overlooked the obvious. I think in 1986 there is a connector on the drivers inner fender that you will need to jumper, if I'm mistaken on the year then you will need to jump terminals TE and E1 (hopefully I remember correct) on the diagnostic box behind the engine compartment fuse box.

My engine and engine wiring is an 87 but the body ect. is an 86.

Don't think there's a difference between the '86 and the '87 that way.

I don't seem to have that little box that's shown in the picture :shrug:

Yeah, the changes came about in late 86 for the 87 models. your connector is going to be on the drivers side fender, it's the smaller of the 2 connectors over there. Here is a good link that covers most situations for the 22RE. you will have to scroll down a little to find what you want.
