87 not getting warm

Ok i have a 87 wit 22re, it has new water pump less then 150miles old a new themostate installes the other day with new anti-freeze. My cluster is showin the truck gettin a lil warm but not much. The senor that is on top of the themostate that goes to the ecu wire was cut so i spliced it back together. Also the other day a heater hose came off due to faulty hose clamp and the cluster showed the truck starting to over heat. I also noticed when its parked at idle after driving it starts to get to right temp but quickly returns to barly over the cold.line. im kinda lost any help would be great.

Did you put the thermostat in the right way, right side up? Also, did you use a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water?

Yes i put the bigger end of the themostate facing down and used universal 50/50

I would double check your thermostat to make sure it's working properly. To test it, take it out and boil some water. Using a coat hanger or pliers, dip the thermostat in the boiling water. If you see the thermostat open then it's working right.

Bottom line, the thermostat is pretty much the only thing that will not allow your motor to get up to temp.

Also, is your temp guage working properly? Are you sure it isn't getting up to temp and your guage is either stuck or not working? Turn your truck on and let it run for a few minutes. Turn on your heater and see if you're getting heat. This will verify if you are actually getting up to temp.

Just a hunch, but...

When the heater hose came off, this must have leaked out SOME coolant. Did you make sure there was enough coolant in the radiator (cooling system) after you replaced the hose and hose clamp? Your temp gauge inside the truck measures fluid temp, not air thus possibly giving you a false reading. And as mentioned if your heater is blowing out hot air, your motor is up to operating temperature.

So in other words, your temp guage is sticking? If your heater blows hot air then your truck is running at normal operating temp.

Sounds to me like there is no problem if the temp gauge is where you say it is.

If for some reason the temp gauge is not going up as high as it used to, maybe the gauge it's self is going bad. Maybe your fan clutch doesn't disengage, thus constantly pulling cooler air through the radiator?

I would say its bad but it does move up when at idle and back down when i start moving and shot stright up when the hose came off. And i dont know wat it used to do since i just got.it 3 weeks ago not.running and only drove it a week now

At this point, I would assume that when it over heated and after you drive it for a few minutes that if the temp guage moves to where it's supposed to be that your temp sender is good. Take your cluster off and clean the inside of it really good with some compressed air.

his gauge just aint goin up high enough.Its goin up but not to the middle were it should be.only thing left would be the gauge.

Ok i got another question my defrost in my runner isnt wrkin but when i switch it to the vents it blows very little this all goes along wit my gauge not showing it up to tempt. I also noticed when it sits at idle the gauge goes up but blows colder air when the heat is in gauged

i have the same problem. i have a very large ever sized radiator. it was like that when i got it. it used to blow hot air but for some reason it stopped. changed the thermo and it still didnt work right. but my gauge is reading normal. i think we both might have faulty thermo's. im gonna rip into mine this weekend and switch it out and see

Well im goin to change the themo wit a high quality one to night and blow my heaterr core out also so ill post wit the results

well i put a new themo in and it wrked perfect along wit a new radiator cap
