87 t4r 22re advice on mods

so I just bought an 87 t4r I have to do the head gasket and im wondering what mods i can do to squeeze any extra power out of it with out breaking the bank!!!
im going to pull the motor and change all gaskets im thinking of a cam but not sure if i can get one that is good with stock components if anybody has ideas give suggestions Thanks!!

There's not very much power to squeeze out of the 22re without blowing it up in a couple months. My friend's most recent 22re rebuild cracked the block 6 weeks after spending $2000 building it himself. He was at around 200hp on a turbo setup.

I would swap in a different motor much faster than trying to add power to a 30 year old engine design. The 2.7L 3RZ Tacoma/4runner motor has 150hp from the factory, and isn't a terribly complicated swap. Beyond that there's the 3.4L 5VZ (190hp), or even the 4.0L 1UZ, packing 260hp.

Swap would be my advice if you are not satisfied with the power. I'm considering upgrading to a 3rd gen, partially for power reasons.

i know i could swap i was just thinking of a minor cam header etc even if its only like 15hp I kinda want to keep the old girl pretty basic!! im just not real sure if i can find a cam that i wont have to change valve springs etc. in order to use!!

22re not worth modding.
slap a header on it and a snorkel and thats all youll really get thats worth it.

A mildly worked head and a mild cam (such as the ones from engnbldr.com) will make a difference, especially with a header added. Not a huge increase in HP, but probably the best bang for the buck.

Now that's all based on a decently working engine to begin with. If the engine is worn out to start with, adding things on is a waste of $.

Thats basicly what I was thinking i figure an rv cam couldnt hurt im not expecting supper power i just figure while im putting it back together a couple extra hundred wont hurt if i squeeze 10 hp out of it id be happy that way on the hwy i might be able to hit 86 LOL!!!!

You'd probably get better results putting premium gas in it as it is...
