Hey I'm new to the forum and new to 4runner ownership but i have done research on these things and admired from afar for to long so i bought one a few months back and have been doing little things here and there to make it more reliable but i have found that my 4wd wont engage the front wheels it engages the axle but the hubs aren't transferring it to the wheels and I've seen that the auto hubs seem to be junk and that most opt to go to a manual hub I've found some warn hubs i was looking at getting but i found somewhere that you need adapters of some sorts to make it from auto to manual is this true or can i just buy the warn hubs for it and put them in and be good to go

There's a difference between automatic and ADD hubs. The conversion from ADD to manual hubs is plug and play, conversion from automatic hubs is more complicated.

Don't buy Warn hubs, they're not as good as the OEM Aisin hubs.

You have automatic locking hubs on your 1st gen. You will need to buy a "spindle nut conversion kit" which consists of a few spindle nuts and washers. Its not a hard job. Warn makes them for converting your truck. They charge a bit too much though you can get a competitors kit for less on ebay. I just did this to mine a year ago.

Complete instructions and what you need and how to convert (also info on automatic hubs which you have vs ADD which 2nd gens have.):

Auto hub conversion clarification

Hello my fellow 4runner enthusiasts, I just joined the game a little late with my 1st gen 4runner. The beast is absolutely great! I love it but am hoping to get my 4WD up and running sooner than later!

I have almost exhausted all my other resources so I am turning to you guys to try and get some clarification. When I recently bought my 3.0Lv6 89 4runner the 4WD was not functioning, but I intended to swap out the auto hubs with manual locking hubs. I purchased a pair of Aisin locking hubs today but do not have a "spindle conversion kit". After searching through various past forums there seems to be a fair bit of contradiction and confusion with the ADD and AUTO hubs systems regarding what is needed to install manual locking hubs. I've read multiple forums saying no conversion kit is needed for an auto hub swap while others say there is a special kit needed.

Sorry to reopen a past thread but I have read through all i can find on this topic as well as called local parts stores and it seems the ADD and AUTO systems are used interchangeably when in fact they are quite different so I am a little confused as to how to go about installing locking hubs. It seems these 'spindle conversion kits' can be pretty pricey so i want to be dead sure I need it before I purchase one. My next step is to contact Toyota and Aisin directly but hoping someone can help sort this out here. Just to clarify, my truck is a 1989 with automatic locking hubs (no vacuum) I am trying to install AISIN locking hubs and wondering if a 'spindle conversion kit' is needed or not.

Thanks a lot
Matt

You need the spindle nut conversion kit, definately. No 1st gen 4runner ever had ADD, whixh is something different altogether. 2nd gen 4runners have the add system, and dont need the conversion kit.

Whatever brand is the cheapest is fine, they are all the same, a few nuts and a few lock washers.

People confuse auto locking hubs and add all the time but they are nothing alike at all.

If its an 89 4Runner it has auto hubs and needs the kit. Auto hubs have black caps on them that say toyota in red. Read the link i posted in this thread it teaches you how to identify, tell the difference and ghsn install the conversion kit and manual hubs.

Finally, the warn conversion kit is pricey, mile marker makes the same kit and its half the price, try ebay.

as noted by others, your '89 has automatic hubs, not ADD. to convert to manual aisin hubs, you need the complete manual hub assembly from a '86 to '95 IFS truck (hub body, dial, internal hub components). you will also need to purchase the spindle nut/washers for an IFS truck (or get them from the hub donor vehicle). you need two nuts per side, a single locking-tab washer between them, and a spacer, so a total of 4 54mm nuts, 2 locking tab washers and 2 spacers. i'd also purchase new hub gaskets, both for the dial cover and the hub body.

the cone washers/nuts from your auto hubs will work with your manual hubs (if you use aisin manual hubs - obviously not warn/superwinch/milemarker/etc).

make sure to retain the axle shaft snap ring and spacer (with inner grooves for the axle shaft), too, from your auto hubs.

in the photo below are the parts needed in addition to the manual hub body for a single side.
