90runner died and wont start

done. would it have messed something up that i tried to start it before?

I just checked, and your engine is a non-interference engine. That means your engine should not be damaged from this broken belt. I had a Kia timing belt break, and bent 2 valves, which cost $700.00 just to repair the head, let alone all the work I did. Can you imagine if I had to pay a mechanic?

Do the contact look bad inside? You may need a new one. Even with this cap, it ran until the belt broke right? Sounds to me that the belt was the problem. I'm sure you could use a new cap, but for now it should run. Dave

so i tried to start it again. it putters and tries to start but while im trying to start it after holding the starter on for about 3-5 seconds max there is a loud *pop* and smoke comes out of the carburetor. it could be from the other day when i was stomping on the gas while trying to start it. what could that be from? is it possible i could have done something wrong when i replaced my spark plug and wires? i have them all set in the right spot on the distributor cap

Do you have the wires going to 123 on passenger side, and 456 going to drivers side? The backfire may be from the excess fuel, but double check wires, and fire order.

im going to double check right now. im gonna put back in the old spark plugs i had just in case i managed to not space them right when i put the new ones in. because before i changed the belt i changed the plugs thinking that was the problem. now that i know it isnt im positive the spark plugs are fine. i'll be back in about 10 mins

Also, turn the distributor to the left, and try again. If it doesn't run turn it to the right, and try again.

i checked and im pretty sure the only spark plug that could be a little bit spaced off is #6. so i think it would still start correct? and distributor do you mean the rotor inside? also would it have anything to do with not having pressure? i currently still have my radiator, fan, and the mass air filter flow out. (thing that runs from the carb looking thing coming out of the top of the motor which blows air out of. thats where the pop is coming from when i try to start it)

Yes, you need your mass air flow hooked up. I know I told you earlier the air filter didn't matter, but I stand corrected. Put everything back together, and she should fire. Are your plug wires going to 123 on passenger side, and 456 going to drivers side??

yeah they were on right im pretty sure, it should be fine with the mass air flow on? does it matter that my radiator is not hooked up? id just hate to put that back in as well and to have to turn around and take it right back off

Confidence My Friend. If you are sure everything is installed correctly, and you have a problem still, it must be else where. But, I doubt it. You don't want that engine to get too hot, so I would put it all back together.

so im looking online a bit and i think that the timing is STILL off. what it is doing is backfiring out of the intake and it still doesn't turn over and start. thats AFTER i installed everything. now that ive gotten it almost all the way back off i think that im gonna see if autozone will rent me a timing light. im not sure if they will but i know that harbor freight down the road from me has a timing light for like $16. also after searching a bit about it i found out that it needs to be 10deg BTDC. wtf does that mean? heh. but also im going to take out the spark plugs that i installed and put back in the old ones just in case i did something wrong with the gapping. does that sound like something it would do with the timing being off still? it almost sounds like it sputtering a little bit then a huge backfire out of the intake with white smoke

also. im going to check for a spark tomorrow. even with the timing off it still should give me a spark yeah? just to be sure i should take any spark plug. ground the threads to something metal(top of motor) and have someone try to start it and watch for a spark correct?

The only way your timing can be that far off that it won't run is your spark plug wiring. And I'm sorry to have given you the wrong information. It is; 135 on passenger side, 246 on drivers side, and the firing order is 123456. The timing light will only help you once it's running. If I wasn't 1500 miles away, I'd come over and help you out. This must be your problem, My Bad.

Try using this correct firing order. This attachment is from Autozone.

Yes it would backfire if the timing is wrong. Plugs are firing at the wrong times, hence timing off. Good luck...it should be running for you tomorrow. :')

i can't thank you enough for helping me. i really hope it works. when i get it running and can get back to work im going to mail you a 12 pack for your help haha. someway to figure out how to repay for your help. id be so lost if you hadnt

okay sweet. also where do you find these sweet attachments? ive looked all over online for a online manual of the 4runner i have and i can't find it anywhere

That's easy. Go to Autozone.com register yourself on their "My Zone" center, choose your car, and it will have a hyperlink for a repair manual right above the car you are working on, and your in. It's cool because you can add as many different cars as you want. Besides your car, I must have 25 other different cars that i have worked on in the past there. It's in pretty good detail too.
