90runner died and wont start

i can't thank you enough for helping me. i really hope it works. when i get it running and can get back to work im going to mail you a 12 pack for your help haha. someway to figure out how to repay for your help. id be so lost if you hadnt

Drink that 12 pack for me, or save your money, you don't need to pay me back anything. I won't take it. I just happened to have helped my cousin do his belt on his '89 4 runner 4 days ago, so it's fresh in my head. I think your belt is on right, you just need the wiring right. Cheers, Dave

Your a good man. If you ever need anything help with computers let me know I can pretty much do anything with them. i'll let you know how it goes tomorrow morning on my truck. also there is a hose coming from the top of my valve cover i think? its a inch or two behind the oil cap on my motor while taking it off when i first started it was snowing so this little 90 plastic piece snapped. hopefully that wont be an issue. i created a little one of my own with extra plastic and gorrila tape. hopefully that doesnt have a great significance to me starting it lol

That should be your pcv hose (positive crankcase ventilation). It shouldn't stop it from firing. Junkyard part.

it started but i had to keep giving it gas to keep it going. what is causing that?

Check for other vacuum hoses that may not be hooked up, or mass air flow hook up, crank sensor plugged in? I would guess you would need to turn the distributor to the right a bit and fire again.

it was my hoses. ive got everything back on and it started up sounding better then before:D

YEAH!!! I knew you could do it!! And, it should run like a new truck with a new, tight timing belt on there.
Now you need to set the timing. I like to use a vacuum guage, because I'm up here at over 5,000 ft. Realistically, your engine is an air pump, taking in air with fuel in the intake, combustion, then exhaust. So, when you get the most vacuum, it runs the best, theoretically. Yeah Again!! You Did It!! :')

Or, you can get a timing light and set it at 10 TDC or, whatever you quoted it at. Do you know how to do this?

im going to go tomorrow to autozone and rent a timing light but im not sure how to even use one. it idles and sounds better but i can tell the timing is a little bit off i can tell from the loss hp and as i drove it around sometimes when i hit a stop light it would stall out but would start right back up. and where ive never had my water outlet taken off that seal went to hell when it came off. so now constant cooling is leaking and causing smoke to come from my hood. about how tight should i make my accessory belts?

Timing light is easy; It should have 2 main wires on it, one has a positive and negative ( red and black) alligator clips for battery power. The other is a large clip with a square whole, which clamps onto your #1 spark plug wire, clamp it on the wire near the spark plug. Once all are hooked up, loosen the distributor so you can turn it, start it up, point the light at the lower timing belt cover. (Remember that jagged plate that you set your crank pulley mark at zero?) it should have #s on it. Now, pull the trigger on the timing light, and the light will flash every time your #1 spark plug fires, look for that mark on the outer edge of pulley, turn the distributor until that mark is at #10 or where ever you want it to be. Tighten distributor down, and re-check your timing. All done. Good luck

You will need to strip all the gasket sealer off with a straight edge razor, clean it all up with a wire wheel on a drill gun or something. Once both sides are clean, put some fresh rtv sealer on them, bolt it down and let it set before running it. I'd let it sit over night. And, your accessory belts do not have to be too tight. Not like your timing belt. Cheers :zoom:

by distributor do you mean the rotor?

okay so there isnt a seal or gasket that goes there its a sealant? im sure i can get that from advance or autozone correct?

No, the distributor. there is a size 12mm bolt on the right side of distributor when you are standing over the drivers side front wheel. Loosen it so you can turn the whole distributor. That is how you change the timing.

okay let me make sure im thinking of the right thing. there is the distributor cap, and underneath it is a metal object with coils inside that i can see. it has a bolt on it. is this what your talking about? i thought i removed that bolt before and it just lets the distributor(if thats what it is) come loose

Yes, that is it. Just loosen the bolt. (Do not take the cap or rotor off). When you turn the whole distributor, your timing mark on the lower timing cover will go up or down, using your timing light, of course, depending on which way you turn it. I try to loosen only enough so it is a little hard to turn, so I don't go too far. Or, so it will stay put until I lock the bolt down once it is set. Get it? Let me know if you don't.

when i loosen that bolt there is a screw probably about 4 inches long that comes out of it. if im looking at the engine from the front it swings to the left and right if i loosen the bolt. what im talking about also has the distributor belt connected to it, the wheel of it anyway.

Are we talking about The unit that your spark plug wires are going to?
