'95 Antenna broke off - do I need to replace the whole thing?!

So my retractable antenna broke off. Do I need to buy a whole brand new antenna unit assembly, or can I just buy a new metal antenna and install somehow? As fas I can tell, I need to buy a brand new unit

It looks like the entire antenna unit assembly costs around $150 here:

My antennae broke off on my 88 4Runner, I went to Toyota and bought a solid antennae for the same year, it fit right in and plugs up the same. The only problem is that the retract switch is now not in use, but I am planning on using it as a switch for some accessory later on down the road. I believe it cost me about 80 bucks for the base and antennae.

this just happened to a buddy of mine. Super easy fix. Got a new one from the dealer for about $20. All we did was used needle nose pliers to take off the ring on the top of the quarter panel. Then we pulled out the broken mast. Now take the ring that you took off the car and put it on the new antenna. Next we turned the radio on so we could hear the motor run like it was putting up the antenna. When it stopped we took the new antenna and threaded the white "teethed" part into the hole and turned the radio off. The motor grabbed the white part and pulled it back into the hole. We threaded the little ring back on the housing and gave it a quick test. Worked perfect. It might take a time or 2 to get it to grab the teeth and pull it in and an extra set of hands is a good idea, but it works. GOOD LUCK!

Mines in the mail also... Now who know if the teeth face to the front or rear when I try to put the new one in? Nothing left of the old one but a broken three inch chrome stub.

Im not sure which way we had it but it will grab pretty easy. Just rotate it a bit once you start to feed it in and it should pull it in. Oh, and we had the antenna extended when we were feeding it in. Once it catches just guide it into place. Just a heads up ....it goes pretty fast....

Just installed mine this weekend. The teeth faced the back of the vehicle.

The install was fairly simple except for the fact that the cable broke off in the drum. I pulled the entire mast out and the cable did not come with it. You have to get the cable entirely out before you can install the new one.

To get the cable out you must open the antenna motor drum and pull out the broken cable:
1) remove the underside panel from above your front right tire
2) unplug the power plug to the antenna motor
3) un-do the bolt that holds the antenna motor in place
4) since the antenna wire that feeds through the firewall (to the back of your radio) is attached to the motor, you can't entirely pull the antenna motor out of the vehicle to work on it. I was able to pull the antenna wire about another inch or two through the firewall - just enough to be able to rest the motor on the tire.
5) remove the 4 screws around the drum and the one bolt that is in the middle of the drum. be careful that you dont drop the nut on the underside of the drum when you remove this bolt.
6) open the drum and BEFORE YOU TAKE OUT THE BROKEN CABLE, TAKE NOTICE TO WHICH DIRECTION THE TEETH ARE FACING. In my 1995, the teeth were facing to the rear of the vehicle.
7) reassemble in reverse order.
8) with the vehicle and radio on, insert the cable in to antenna mast with the teeth facing the correct direction. turn off the power to the radio and the cable should catch and be pulled down in to the antenna mast and drum.

easy enough.

I said screw the antenna and bought a bluetooth adapter for my aux cable and use spotify on my phone wirelessly. Local radio stations here suck anyways

I'm gonna do the "Taco Antenna Mod" to get rid of the power antenna. If you go to google and do a search for it, you'll find something. I have it bookmarked at home. If you can find it, it has the part #s you need to order online.

I've seen the posts about the Taco mod. I'm actually going to do a couple of changes... I've ordered a Y adapter, and an adapter for the smaller antenna lead to the normal size (to fit the Y). That will pull the window antenna as well as the motorized. Then, I'm going to add a small rocker switch to turn the antenna off when I want it down. Like going through the car wash, or in trees, or whatever.

My last 2nd Gen had the power to the antenna unhooked, probably due to a broken mast, and I used the Y adapter on it. No problem receiving good radio signals with only the window antenna.

I'm not a fan of the whip. I like the idea of choosing if I want the antenna up or down, depending on where I am, and what I'm listening to.
