97 T4R - replacing stock HU with a different stock HU.

Am in process of replacing the stock 3 disk HU (disk player doesn't work) with a single disk stock HU.

In removing the old HU - there is a single black wire not connected to anything. Is that likely a ground - or the "extra" antenna wire I have "heard" about?. It does not have any king of connector on the end - just bare stipped wire.

I don't think it is the extra antenna.

Installed the new HU and did not connect the extra black wire and all is well.

Well - contrary to my previous post, all is not well.

The Passenger front and the drivers rear speakers are not working. They were not working off of the old HU either. I connected another good speaker at the door connector and still no sound.

I think it is the amp. I was going to use a LOC to connect an aftermarket amp to drive new front components and let the rears run off the factory amp. I will do more checking tomorrow - but I think the factory amp is kinda hosed.

Now the question is - how can I wire up a 4 channel aftermarket amp using the new HU - but not the old factroy amp. Possible? Can i just cut the old amp off and use the wires coming out of the radio? All I need are power, ground, and illumination - right? But i guess i'll need an amp with line level inputs?? HELP?

This is my daughters car - I know many will say not to worry about the rears - but she likes that rear fill effect.

Please dont tell me I have to buy a working factory amp off eBay just to tap into the line level signals so I can add an amp .

You should be able to do that. When I installed my HU I bipassed the stock amp and just have my speakers running off of the the HU. It auctually sounds better.

You should just have a power wire running from your battery to the amp. The ground just goes from the amp to a factory grounding sport. The remote turn on will go from the amp to the HU. You will also need RCAs that run from the amp to the HU.

You also have to run wires from the amp to each speaker.

I have installed an LOC when I added a sub/amp to my BMW - but I tapped into the existing - working amp.

Do you know if the stock HU has any power out of it at all? Or is all the power supplied by the factory amp?

If it does - I can get by with a 2 channel amp just to drive the new front components and run the rears of the HU power - but again - I dont know if the stock HU has a small built in amp to drive the rear speakers.

I am using a factory HU - so no rca's - hence the LOC.

You say - "when I installed my HU - I bypassed the stock amp". Did you replace the HU with an aftermarket HU that puts our 12-17RMS per channel - or did you replace with a factory type Toyota HU??

Oh. I misunderstood your post. I thought you were putting in a new HU and new comps.

I put in a new HU.

I would bet that the stock HU doesn't have any power output. I have a Limited so I think it had the upgraded speakers. Someone who has a SR5 or below needs to chime in and tell if they have a factory amp or not.

If you keep the stock rears I would just be careful about sending them too much power if you go with a four channel.

Yea Clemsonfan - not using an aftermarket HU - another stock HU with single disc CD. so likely no pwer from HU.

Am replacing stock speakers with new components and rears with new coaxials.
