99-02 "cup holder mod"

Am I the only one who likes the 96-98 style better? I don't mind the cup holders up top. Does any one have pic of it to jog my memory? Maybe I will trade someone?

My cup holder is also up top on my 96. I like it up there. I have coffee every morning and it being up top allows me to keep my eyes up and on the road while driving. It blocks the digital clock but I glance at it while I have the cup in my hand. I keep a lid on all my drinks and I've never had a problem with spillage. I do get some water drips from a cold drink sweating but I keep a bandana handy under the seat to wipe it up. I have a stick so it just drips on the shifter boot. I don't want to have to look down and sit my cup in front of the console. The right side of my holder has the "stop" piece broken off the arm so it opens with enough to snugly hold a large Slurpee which I like to enjoy on a hot day! I'm sure that wouldn't fit in the lower console holders. Two cup holders is enough for me to have upfront and I think the higher console on the 99 may interfere with my shifting.

Also I do prefer the 2 spoke steering wheel to the 4 spoke. It is very comfortable and there is less gauge, cruise, and switch obstruction.

I don't remember the placement as the issue more so the fact if you did go over a bump or something that's cause liquid to escape then your shifter area would get all messy. Less to clean with the 99+ cup holders - or at least more contained area.

I also like the 96-98 holders too, but don't likethe mess it can cause.

I love my 99 console. I used to have a problem where the drinks would sometimes be too small for the cup holders on the dash and then youd get stuck holding it. And along witht he shifter getting messy if it spilled. Your also right above the radio. The 99 cup holder is the best thing i did to the inside of my truck!

I test drove this one yesterday, and the big space in this console seems pretty nice, but i think I will spill more with the old cupholders.

I like the 96-98 cupholders better as well, i used them all the time, the 99+ console and cupholders is just room for me to put more sh*t. The 99's are really sketchy when you have a fountain drink with a lid on it, I've had the seat pop the lid off my drinks before.

I like have the Dash upholders and the 99 center console, now i have 6 upholders and way more storage.

If you swap over you'll still have the benefit of the pull out cupholders with 2 additional cupholders to use as well. Also my 99 center console sits higher than my 96 which I like better as well.

I have had two 3rd Gens both stick and having it up top on a 5speed is a definite plus. They are also a fantastic place to rest your phone when using GPS! Overall though I prefer the post 1999 design and cup holders, the certainly function better as cup holders, they just get your arm covered in whatever your drinking if you have a 5speed.
Just as a side not the worst cup holder design ever has to be in the 6 series BMW! they forgot it and just added it as a permanent structure protruding from the dash like an 80's cell phone!

Has anyone found any innovative things to do with the old cupholder shelf/drawer crap after they did the conversion?

I keep trying to think of something to use it for...:ohwell:

Give it to me? The spring in mine just broke this morning!

HA!

I was thinking about putting something in there to pop up/drop down when it was opened, but am still brainstorming...

Maybe if I'm unable to figure something out, I can pop it out for you.

You ever off road with drinks in the old style console. Up way too high and really was just asking for spillage on a open soda or what not,. With the newer console the cups are placed down closer to the center of gravity and never had to much of an issue with drinks unless they were really full. Plus they aren't blocking the heater vents. Plus the lower cupholders can hold large drinks better and is much more stable.
I've owned both and I would never go back to the dash hanging cup holders ever.

I like my older style cup holder, i usually put my drinks in the rear cup holder anyway. but the front ones are great for clipping radios and sunglasses.

I don't have the 99+ cup holders but I love my 98 (broken) cup holders for placing my phone for GPS/music. By just rapping the power cord around, I can get it to stay in place. I then wedge it in the dash lip by pushing the cup holder in a bit.

Also, because I have a 5 speed, it is nice not to have clutter in the way while shifting. The space between the passenger seat belt and the seat itself has always come through for me holding my drinks.
