Have anyone done a cluster swap from a 99 to a 97? Just curious if it plug and play or what is needed to be done? Sorry in advance if I miss a post on this already

Because the '99 clusters are updated and nice looking- have you seen one up close and personal?!
OP, I have one waiting to go in my rig, but I haven't taken the time to read/compare EWDs yet.
It's not plug-n-play; the connectors are different. I got 6" of wiring, along with all(4) of the connectors when I got the cluster, so at least I have that.
The '97 only has two connectors(a green and a blue), while the '99 has 4(as well as a good amount more wires).
Like I said- I need to take the time to read/compare the EWDs, but it's not a simple direct PnP swap. It might not even work without the '99 ECU or something. I'm actually pretty sure I made a thread with the same title like 2yrs ago. If I remember right, no one had any info on the swap at all.

Keep us updated! I would love a later cluster too (or a Tundra one), as well as the LCD climate control.

I will! I know; If it wasn't currently my DD, I would be doing a full '99+ body and dash harness swap, to include the electronic HVAC. Since that's not feasible as a DD, I'm planning on at least updating to the '99+ HVAC.
Most do. The PRND2L in the cluster started in '98 though, it wasn't a '99+ change. My '99+ cluster doesn't have it, as it's from a manual rig. Glad you like your '97 cluster [emoji1360] It's not like mine bothers me, I just like things updated if it works out easily enough.

Mine is slightly different.. the Hilux Surfs had digital climate control back in '96... but instead of an LCD display, it looked like a regular slider, with numbers for the temperature that you wanted.
I figured as all the control systems are already there it might be easier... unfortunately I only know of on 99+ surf in the UK they are very very rare.

Isn't the '97 a mechanical speedo/odo? Are you auto or manual? If manual, which engine? (In '99, 4 cyl manual speed signal comes from the trans, V6 manual from the ABS, autos come from the trans.) You'd have to capture a pulse speed signal from somewhere. Do you have ABS?
The plugs on the cluster are sure to be different, but most can probably be repinned if the speedo issue can be solved. It's a lot of work and I hope you can find a '99 harness to salvage the pigtails.
You're talking a lot of work here. You have to really want this.

Here is the Cliff Notes version: '99 CS has five plugs, '97 has three. Only one of the '99 plugs is physically similar to one on the '97, but the terminals don't match up on the 3 or 4 wires I checked randomly. So you would basically have to get all five pigtails from a '99, and match them wire-by-wire to the '97 truck, and then hope that none of the 15 or 20 wires left unconnected are a problem. That's after you figure out where to get the speed signal from.
You couldn't pay me to try this.

Still has the ridiculous A/C button on it too, I see. I never got that. You can have the temp as low as possible and the fan speed cranked way up, but until that A/C button is pushed you won't have cool air...

It's fine after 21 years! (Factory fitted option!) Unfortunately I broke one of the clips on the rear window switch and haven't been able to find a CF finish replacement
I'd not say its ridiculous, some people like to get a blast of cooler air when its cold outside, cold enough to not need additional refrigeration. I personally leave it on all the time as if its cold, its probably damp, and it dehumidifies the interior.
That said my AC compressor is on the way out, so being able to switch it off means I can still use the climate control without worrying about the pump massively failing!

What?! Ridiculous??
I definitely use the AC to dry out the air when humidity is high in the cabin- on all different temperature levels. Sure, it automatically kicks on the AC if you're running the defrost, but what if you want mixed def/feet? Or even another output location. Losing independent control of the AC pump would be terrible- in my opinion, of course.
