'99 manual SR5 occasional daily driver and weekend crawler build

Got the extended breather done but I picked a different spot to extend the tube up into. Since I removed my spare in prep for the f150 gas tank anyway, I had plenty of space in the back and chose to push the tube up into the driver quarter panel, pushing through the factory gromit for the trailer wiring.

Also started the e-brake using the kit from midcoma. See last picture, what are others doing with thhe axle end?.I can't seem to get the block that pivots I'm the OEM cable off. Should I cut the cable up higher?

Really awesome meeting you!! I'm the guy with the black dog that approached you under the big tree at Hidden Falls. I'm still compiling videos and pictures from my first trip offroading so I can't wait to show friends and family a video of how it went. My brake setup is unfortunately working very well right now and I just learned to weld in order to make an axle tool to rebuild my rear axle seals and bearings. Sigh..... maybe mine will start leaking and I'll have a reason to convert to rear calipers :) Could I buy the schematic off you or would you recommend I just measure and cut/drill myself or would you even want to make a set and I'll buy them from you sometime? Also, is there a good write-up on the 76 Blazer master cylinder conversion? I deleted my ABS at the same time, added a proportioning valve and residual valve while reusing all of the oem lines. I wouldn't mind making a diy how to for people who want to increase the size of their master and don't want to pay almost $300 for the land cruiser MC while deleting abs and getting rid of the ABS.
Cheers! Looking at your truck in person blew my mind. I need to invest in a good lift ASAP!

Thanks for the kind words, good to meet you as well. For the brake backing plates, you can take the template I had earlier in the thread and print it out at 34% scaling and it should line up, just double check the caliper bracket mounting bolts distance between each other. I searched through sleepydad 's build thread for the measurements and then re-drew using tinkercad. I don't really want to sell them as A. midcoma has a kit which is very high quality and I don't want to take away from all the dev work he did, also liability, etc... Also, I think midcoma has a blazer master cyl upgrade with TBU so you might look through his build thread or maybe add to it. Never a bad idea to do a write up in any case though.

As for the lift, I can't recommend the Sonoran Steel kit enough. It was great to chat with the owner there and get all the stuff working together well.

Looks good man, just a thought but you may want to take the hitch off or get a fabricated rear bumper. It’ll increase your approach angle and it won’t look out of place. Have a 99 5 speed myself that’s been lifted on 33’s...we got lucky with the manual:cheers:

Thanks, it's in the works, I just need a few weeks to finish other projects and get back to work on the 4runner.

Well, I got a little crooked today and definitely broke something backing off this fun looking angle. It almost feels like a chipped ring gear tooth as the clunk is cyclical but I can still move under power forward and reverse. Nothing looks broken from the outside or underneath but the clunking makes me want to come back in the morning with a trailer. Anyone broke a tooth before and can describe what it sounds like or feels like?

Drained the rear differential fluid and confirmed. All sorts of metal goodies on the he plug. Time to upgrade...

Confirmed the damage today, 3 ring teeth and one pinion tooth sheered clean off. I'm looking at upgrades, looks like Toyota has a 4.56 ratio with e-locker possible. Has anyone been able to locate a 4.56 axle or even just the differential? I'd get the front to match as well of course. Unfortunately all the salvage yards near me have the diffs already taken out of all 4runners and tacos or they were 3.9 ratio rather than the 4.1 to match my front.

I think the 4.56 was only on the 4 cylinder models so I’d be looking at those ones in the junk yards, it’s pretty uncommon

Thanks, that's really helpful. I was going down the list for where to search and came across several of these types of auctions:

https://www.copart.com/lot/52730670/clean-title-2008-toyota-tacoma-double-cab-prerunner-tx-waco

This shows an axle code of A04A which according to Toyota 4x4 Gears and Differentials - LC Engineering looks to be a 4.56 ratio. I think from what I've been able to tell, taco's didn't receive the upgraded 8.4" rear end until 2009 but of course, I'd have to drive up there and confirm. But this particular one is about 1.5 hours away from me so not terrible.

Anyway, I've been cruising ebay auctions too, hoping for quality enough there...

I have an A04A axle code and mine is a 4.30 geared rear e-locker. I have verified this with a spin test.

I don’t have any experience with 2nd gen tacos, but I would imagine that even if the rear 3rd member is the same as ours the front diff is likely very different and probably won’t swap over so I’d keep looking for a 4runner with that ratio

They are supposed to be the same according to the taco boards, but....

OK, this is interesting. What year is yours? Maybe A04A is only good for 4.56 after MY2000 vehicles?

2000 Limited. I don't think Toyota would redesign their axle code system, but keep the stickers the same template. I'm not the only one with an A04A 4.30 axle either. I would lean more towards bad information or maybe tacoma heavy information.

All good points. That Taco auction is up to $4k+ so that's out anyway. There's a 99 4runner auction ending tomorrow that I'll watch to see where the price goes. It has A03A axle code so it should at least match my 4.1 ratio. And I'm still cruising ebay for something interesting as well... Thanks for the info!

Interesting, so I decided to do some digging online with toyota to check compatibility. The case itself looks to be compatible with just 4runners and FJ cruisers up through 2009:

1991-2009 Toyota Carrier Case 41101-35170 | Discount Toy

But then I checked the locking case and it's compatible up through 2015 tacoma's :

1996-2015 Toyota Carrier Case 41101-35151 | Discount Toy

then I checked the side gears to compare axle diameter and spline count and there is a missing section for 2001-2008 4runners but does show compatibility for 2007-2009 FJ cruisers:

1993-2019 Toyota Side Gear 41039-34060 | Discount Toy

So it really looks to be a grab-bag and nothing is for certain which is really annoying.

So, yea, finding 4.56 gears is definitely proving difficult. I have a line on a set of 4.30 diffs with rear e-locker whole axle that I may try to swap in and see how that works out. In theory, it should all work without me doing any housing modification to my existing housing nor without paying labor to re-gear the front to match. And I'll end up with some spare cores to send out to ECGS once I'm ready to upgrade gearing...
