99 SR5 foglight wiring

Our 99 SR5 came without factory fogs, but the wiring was there under the bumper.

I've wired in some LED lights using the wiring under the bumper and have purchased the proper fog relay as well as the dash switch with the orange light.

I opted to go with the dash switch because it was cheaper than buying a new headlight switch with the fog switch built in.

Anyway... I found some wiring instructions online regarding tapping into the C13 connector under the steering column and then wiring that to the dash switch. I pulled everything apart and found I was missing a wire to tap into on the connector. I did a bit more research and found that the diagrams most had found online were for 2000+ models with DRL.

Does anyone know where I can tap into inside the cabin to activate the fog relay?

:thanks:

According to my paper '99 EWD, on the non-DRL the C13 connector has a black/red wire to the fog relay coil at Pin 11 and a white/black ground wire at Pin 10. The DRL model has the same black/red wire at Pin 11, but a green/black wire provides the ground at Pin 10 from the DRL relay. The switch just connects the wires at Pin 10 and Pin 11 in both cases.

So as long as you put the black/red wire to your switch, any good little chassis ground will work on the other end of the switch if you don't have the white/black wire. If you don't have the black/red wire to the relay, you're screwed.

Now getting the pilot led/bulb on your dash switch to come on may be more complicated depending on how that switch is wired. But it would be the same for DRL models.

:thumb: Thank you for taking the time to check your diagram. I'll check it out tomorrow evening and see if I can get this sorted out.

If all else fails I'll run some wires through the firewall grommet and ditch the relay.

Looking over the C13 connector quick this morning. I have a black/wite ground on pin 10, which I've confirmed is grounded by meter and bolt by fuse box.

There is no wire going to pin location 11 which is supposed to be the black/red wire going to the relay - it's just empty.

Would you happen to know what pin on the relay the black/red wire is supposed to go to if it were there? Since it isn't there for whatever reason I can wire it in and fish it through the firewall grommet.

On the later EWD it is pin 2, with Pins 1 and 5 being 12V and Pin 3 being out to the fog lamps. If you find the two "hot" pins, jumper one of them to 3 and it should light the fog lamps. This will leave the opposite corner for the switch circuit. Only the four pins are used.

Same in '99 non-DRL. You might check for the black/red in the gray harness connector IG1 from the engine room in the left kick panel at Pin 5. They may have run it as far as there.

The pin-outs for IG1 are identical to the 2002 shown here on page G:

Pin 5 on IG1 - Am I looking at the correct IG1 here?

Thanks again guys!

Cool. I'll check it out when I'm home from work tonight and let you know how it goes.

Please do. I may try the same thing one day and I have a feeling our rigs are identical as far as fog wiring, so you might end up helping me.

Well.. Good news is I finally got everything wired and closed up.

Bad news is that the wire didn't exist in the 1G1 connector either. I ended up just fishing 2 wires through the firewall grommet and connecting them to the switch. I then connected the other lead on the switch to a hot switched 12v wire in the steering column.

You are switching 12V directly to the fog lamps, or to the relay? Switching 12V with a Toyota switch? Say it ain't so!

And what voltage did you want him to switch???? 12V is pretty universal....

(Just jerking your chain. Totally agree, use of a relay is required for fog lights.)
