99 Tall Fronts, OME 906 Rear, 4Runner Specific 5100s Installed And Review

Anyone have experience with this spring setup but on regular replacement shocks instead of the bilsteins? Looking for a slight lift that's even F/R so my tires up front no longer rub.

Thanks again!
Your front tires shouldn't rub with that tire size. A good alignment (high enough caster) will clear the firewall/pinch weld area. Also, a lift won't just magically get the tires to clear - they travel the same path, whatever the height of the truck is... (they might rub less often on the street, but they will rub just the same when flexing off road unless the alignment is right)

What 'normal' shocks are you talking about? The 5100's aren't much more expensive than most of the 'normal' options that are worth putting on the truck (4600's, KYBs) and probably less expensive than OEM. Avoid cheap shocks like the plague... (Monroe, etc.)

The front '99 talls will be fine with any shock choice (they are OEM, after all!). The rear 906's are stiffer than OEM, but are progressively wound - so they will probably work ok with most shocks. They technically will void shock warranties that don't cover lifted trucks, but that might be the only downside.

Thanks for the reply, Charlie! I guess I should've clarified....I want to give the truck a slight lift anyway so that is why I was going this route.

Anyone have some used 906's they'd like to sell? :)

I see Moog as an option on Amazon that's pretty cheap as well...

Get the 5100's and save the money on front springs then (it has notches to raise front...). The stock front springs don't really sag with time, anyway.

If you want to save money on rear springs, find some 4th gen, 5th gen or FJ cruiser rear springs to swap in. 10mm trim packers can lift it a bit more.

Is there ever a point that it’s worth getting new springs. I’ve got a 99 limited with around 236,000 miles. Would it be worth putting new 5100’s with old springs?

I'm running the 880's/906 and 5100 and really love it. I had two giant rolls of carpet padding in the back yesterday and really felt the springs take over. Super smooth and less bounce than normal. Great set up for hauling weight or not.

Are the 5100s any different from HD 4600? Besides the fact that the 5100 is adjustable height. I don't tow or off-road but damn Michigan roads is like offroading lol. I'd like to see what better options I have.

I currently have 99 talls and 906 in the back but with kyb shocks up front and bilstein HD 4600 in the rear. I feel like it can be better but idk how much better.

They're probably pretty close, it's just the 5100 you can get a little lift with them. I have mine on the second notch which comes in right about 2"

The fronts have the height adjustment and the rears are valved for stiffer lift springs. Bilstein doesn't give out valving or internal details though, so we can't be 100% sure.

It isn't a fair comparison, but I like my 5100's much better than the ~80k mile old 4600s I pulled off...

I'm thinking about going with the same 99 / 906 set up with 5100 on all four corners. For those that went that route, did you put the 5100s on the lowest ring?

Currently I have the original 02 springs in the front with 4600s, 5100s with 5th Gen springs in the back. The back sits 1" higher than the front, which doesn't bother me at all. For a front end refresh, I got some 4Runner specific 5100s and some used 99s that I'm going to install tomorrow. I assume at the lowest rung it'll lift the front end 1", bringing me level for the time being. Then when I put the 906s in it'll take the back up 1", giving me a 1" rake. Does that sound right?

Get some center of hub to fender lip measurements. We have no way of knowing what height your rig is currently at. "Stock height" is right around 20", '99 talls will get you near 21"
