Stories....

Brings to mind the story of the construction worker building a house. Was walking across the second floor with a framing nailer that he'd 'fixed' to have a pressure trigger. He tripped and put a 3" nail though his steel-cap boot, though the foot, through the sole of the boot, and in to the wood beneath his shoe.

His buddies got a saw and cut the nail between the wood and his shoe, and took him off to emergency.

The Triage nurse took one look at the head of the nail at the top of his boot, and asked:

"Why didn't you stop hammering?" :ybrick:

Invest in one of those old fashioned "cross bar" types. You get more torque using both hands and arms. (equal pressure on both sides). Less chance of slipping off the nut.

I was wrenching on one of my mountain bikes yesterday. I was removing a pedal, and pulling up as hard as I could, when the pedal finally broke free my hand went flying into the chain ring. One of the teeth decided to go completely through the center of my pinky nail. Now the whole thing is black and ready to fall off. Talk about painful.

MORAL: Toss a couple of these into every tool box you own (and the back of your car).

Yeah i sliced my finger cause i got it stuck between the spinning rotor and the fork, didnt feel to good.

Cheap tools

Along the same lines, I was replacing the front derailleur on my bicycle (it's now 18 years ago). It was attached to the bicycle using a clamp system that had a phillips screw clamping it together. The screw was tight, and I knew that when the screw loosened thw whole clamp would twist on the bike frame.

I was using borrowed (and cheap) tools (I was at university).

The screw-driver kept on 'skipping' out of the screw.

I was pushing really hard on the screwdriver to prevent the skipping.... and also holding the clamp so that it would not twist.

Now, you all know where this is going, right... but you're wrong.... ;-)

I was being very careful to keep my 'holding' hand out of the way in case the driver slipped.... what I was not expecting....


...the screwdriver handle shattered... and the back-end of the metal screw-driver shank went all the way through my hand in the thick part of the webbing between the base of my thumb and the palm...

Also took a notch out of the bone of the thumb too.

MORAL: Do not use cheap tools

And I never have since... ;-)

:repuke: wow, this thread is becoming a throw up fest. OUCH mib!! Using cheap tools is something not everyone can appreciate. I use craftsman (or my buddy's Snap On). So far, so good. I don't have any horror story about using cheap tools, but yeah, you DO notice how much easier it is to work with good ones.

Another thing, working on the 4runner i find is something that will end me with some nice slices/cuts/bruises on my arms/hands/fingers are inevitable, the worst part is i know they are coming, i was loosening the last bolt on the jettas intake manifold and it was frozen stuck, and pushed really hard and it broke loose and my thumb was sliced open from the edge of the manifold, needless to say i cleaned it off and superglued that sh*t closed.

Yeah, i'm sure you are 100% right. I was in a hurry to get to work and i rushed and did something very stupid. I learned from it, believe me LOL!

So how did it put a hole down by the top of your foot, but it imbedded into your shin? It's the "magic tire iron" theory! Glad you're ok. I've beaten the crap outta myself working on cars, but the tire iron into the shin is not something I woulda seen coming.

I saw a guy lowering his truck with a Hi-lift once on the trail and the thing let loose and the handle came flying up and whacked him in the head and almost knocked his old ass out. It was pretty funny after we knew he was ok.

I'm still not entirely sure. All I know is that it happened. My theory is that my ankle was turned in such a way that when i slipped off, i was just unlucky enough to have it re-enter. The fact that it missed my foot completely is also a mystery.

Just as a general update, the stitches are coming out on Tuesday! YES!!

Well, the stitches came out yesterday because the site got infected and is now cellulitis. I have learned more of a lesson here than I ever thought possible. I will be 100% more careful from now on.
