A-Ha's Build.

Where did you buy the worm gear?

They changed over to the spacer sometime after 2010. this came out of an 07 FJ. Worm gear was already inside :reddance: I'm to understand wyatt may have some extra worm gears hanging around.

Did you get the spring kit thing yet for the shifter? curious what it looks like. I got the shifter from the FJ for this to and it has a spring on it. Wondering if I can use or modify that spring to work with the new shifters.

In one of Wyatts builds he shows a picture of the new spring. I bought it off him. I think it's in his write up of how to do the twin stick mod. The spring that has to be upgraded is part of the shifter assembly it goes in the tcase itself. Want me to find it?

wouldnt mind, I've been looking around. I don't know exactly what I'm looking for though.

I've tried to join the RST forum and I've emailed wyatt. Its been a couple days since I've tried to join and I haven't really been "accepted" yet lol still on limited access. I emailed RST market place contact email [email protected] still waiting to here back.

My only complaint about Wyatt is he can be ridiculous slow! We all got lives, but he's running a business that we are trying to patronage....

Modding Fj Case for Twin Sticks

Got a good Start on this project this weekend. The twin sticks came in friday, so I made way to the shop an cleaned up the work bench good before getting started..

Basically followed the steps from the write-up in the link I posted earlier to get to this point:
IMG_3986.jpg

This is where the little pill retainer rod is located. Took me a second to find it.

IMG_3990.jpg

pretty simple process with the shift fork, just cut the little extended tab off and then process putting the case back together

which basically all you do is clean the mating surfaces.. Alot..

Grab a beer

Then clean some more:

Finally the cases should look like this

After the mating surfaces are cleaned you just apply some RTV to one side, this side was the easiest to pick up and guide onto the other half.

IMG_4148.jpg

bolt them things together good now,

IMG_4149.jpg

See I told you I cut the tab off the shift fork

IMG_4150.jpg

Then just look at it!

IMG_4151.jpg

Thats all you can do at this point is just look at it!

IMG_4158.jpg

Now onto the fun part! prepping the 4runner for surgery!

Well this is where we're headed

IMG_4160.jpg

And this is in the way,

IMG_4162.jpg

Only thing there is to do is get everything out of the way,

IMG_4166.jpg

IMG_4169.jpg

On to the top side now,

IMG_4170.jpg

I mean everything

IMG_4171.jpg

Then cut the hole, and clean the edges. Prep for paint and seal up the bare metal,

IMG_4224.jpg

Back over to the Tcase to fab up the shifters, Finally got some help!

Couple things to note thus far,

I cut way to big of a hole in the floor, but its all good. I can cover an seal everything with rubber, rivets, and the few bolts that hold some thing down in that that area. Basically from the vertical bracket back, could have been left solid. I was fitting the case with the shifter block on and it was high enough to hit that far back so I just removed the sheetmetal vs. taking the block off.
Bright side, theres plenty of access room now!

Keeping the transition from the shifter block to the new location of the shifters as low as possible is key, there's really not a lot of room between the top of the tcase and the bottom of the body. Even with my 1-1/4" body lift, its tight.

Moving on though,

shifters are starting to look good!

I'm glad you are doing this. I can see everything perfectly on an actual 4runner for when I'm able to do mine. Undecided on the dual sticks still. Shorter throw is nice, but I just plain don't need 2wd lo. Or do I?.. Ugh. Lol
Another thing I like about this, you crack the case open and get a good look at all the internals to make sure everything is good, clean it all up, paint it if wanted even, make sure the seal is good and leak free, on top of the less to worry about with a manual shift tc and all that. Much peace of mind!
Do you know, do you have to stop completely to shift 2wd/4wd? Hi/lo is a given.

At a stopping point now until I get a good piece of rubber to create my seal with. I've got the shifters back out drying from being painted black. As well painted the bare metal from cutting the hole. I'd like to weld up some of the excessive cut gaps but I'd have to removed the seats and carpet. Not that I'm in a rush I just dont have the motivation to go through all that right now. I've got some intentions in the back of my mind to go through the entire interior to removed seats and carpet for cleaning so I may take that on during that project.

Up next will be working out the wiring from the sensors to the proper wires in the cab to still have use of some indicators. Since I dont have a 4wd hi indicator light I'll be trying to tie into the center diff Locker indicator light for 4wd vs 2wd. then just have the 4wd lo operating correctly. I dont know that any ones done it yet but since I'm never going to use my down hill accent control, ever.. I may try to tie the neutral sensor into that indicator. (neutral = truck rolling down hill :biggrin2:)

everthing else involved with the tcase and shifters is completed just have to get the seal installed and attach the shifter boot to that seal to wrap up the install.

4wd becomes shift on the fly for anyone doing this in a V8. the V6 guys will have to stop and flip a switch to let the front axle engage. then shift the lever.

To be honest, I don't quite think there's enough room to allow the J shift pattern of the single shifter to work in the 4runner center console area, without modifying some plastic trim pieces anyway. It wouldn't be a clean look IMO.

Nice! I was thinking it would be that, the fj is shift on the fly, but wasn't sure.
