back to the 22re (my chubby just went away), i just rebuilt mine. its an 85. i was an alignment tech for lesschwab for a few years and have also worked as a metal fabricator. i currently run a d6 dozer in the woods. (building logging roads). i am a decent mechanic but had never had to pull an engine before i vapor locked my 4runner, let alone rebuild an engine. i took mine to the local machine shot and had him bore it out. he redid the head minus redoing the cam (looked fine), ground the valves and shaved it etc. i kind of had a hard time getting one of the pistons to go back in and didnt think it was a big deal. it went with some effort (ring compressor was going bad). i got every thing back together and it fired right up. ran good. next day i took it hunting and it burned oil like a some*****. i kept it topped off. i went the recommended 500 miles and changed the oil (i was using cheap napa 10 30). it still burned oil pretty fast so i switched to non detergent for the next 500. i have about 100 miles to go before it comes out. it seems the oil consumption has gone down but still uses some. im thinken i buggered up a ring or maybe put one upside down or in the wrong place (possible?). the machine shop says just keep runnen it but im paranoid. he gave me the rings and what have ya after he bored my block...im wanting to take it back apart to see whats up but dont wanna jump the gun. what would you guys recommend? ps it dosnt smoke consistently but some times it will. probably normal but worth mentioning. :happens: pps... i checked the compression and they were all around 165 170 ish mabey even 180. dont quiet remember. was within spec. would a leak down test give me any info? on a side note... could the machinist be held accountable for you having to have the work redone or do you have to eat it?
