Good info. Put a hitch hauler (metal basket) with a cooler full of beer and ice and some firewood/etc on the hauler. Looked like I had 2 tons of concrete on the rear bumper.

I called my local dealership and they are playing games and want me to bring the vehicle in with the recall letter. Having trouble printing it, but still, I have a feeling they will pull something over on me once they have it in the shop.

I've read the '99 rear coil springs are better and will fit. True? or is there a vendor site you could refer me to?

You can call other dealers around and by giving them your vin number they can tell you if this has been done or not.

Enter your vin and you will be able to see any services performed at a Toyota dealer. It's a good way to verify if a seller is saying they have only taken it to the dealer.

Okay, so my VIN falls in this bucket mentioned on the document posted by [MENTION=14772]shootmymime[/MENTION] - HN86R 0001001-0078300

However when I enter this on the toyota owners website it does not mentions any active recall but there is no service record found at all!

What might have happened here?

I replaced my coil springs with new factory springs and still had a sag. I just installed 1.5" Daystar spacers on the rear and now it sits level. If I had to do it over again, I would not replace the springs because it didn't fix a thing. That little bit of sag has a very negative impact on the ride and handling too. Toyota should correct the problem on all 3rd gens instead of limiting the recall to the first few years. I got the spacers for around $40 and installed them myself so it was an easy, inexpensive fix. For those of you on a budget let me make a recommendation... I bought my 97 last week and it has 194,000 miles on the factory suspension. It rode like crap, especially the rear. I noticed from looking underneath it that the rear was sitting on the cone shaped bump stops that sit inside the springs. I ordered my new shocks and ordered the Daystar 1.5" spacers for the rear. The spacers came in yesterday so I went ahead and installed them by themselves. What a difference in the ride. No more bottoming out and the ride is smooth since I'm not riding on the bump stops any longer. In the future I plan to update all of my springs, but for now I have made a big improvement for a little over $40. Can't wait to put my shocks on this weekend.

I just got my 01 4Runner's shocks with Bilsteins 4600 + stock coils aroun 7 months ago, it still sags but not as much anymore. I do want it to be a bit better, is it pretty easy to install the 1.5" Daystar spacers just for the rear?
Also Amazon says this fits for my 01 4runner Limited 4wd

Do I need to put anything in the front sides too or just the rear? I'm gonna have a local mechanic who is pretty good and charges cheap install these.

I have a '98 4Runner Limited. Manufactured 04/98.
I only read about the rear coil recall recently so I called the Toyota dealer in Cochrane AB and emailed them the notice.
This was their reply:
This recall only effected the 4Runners that were 2WD. This is a US recall (20A) and there were no 2WD 4Runners sold in Canada. I pulled your VIN on both the US and Canadian recall websites and your 4Runner has no outstanding recalls on either site!

I also entered my VIN on Toyota site and nothing is listed as outstanding.
It would have been great to get the this done for free, oh well.

So what route should I go now?
The rear is sagging a little and I've never liked how it handled rough roads.
Although putting BFG AT/KO2's on it was a big! improvement in handling.
What route should I take regarding the sag, replace with the same stock? Aftermarket and if so what?

BTW, I did the front transfer case seal yesterday, it was fairly painless for a non-mechanic like me.
But I couldn't have done it without the great posts & photos on this site.

OME is Old Man Emu from Australia. You can get them from ARB. I picked them up at ARB in Sumner. I have had them on for five years now and they still ride great and NO rear sag.

So I went to look up the OEM Coil springs for my 1996 4runner and all the descriptions read 4WD w/16" wheels. I have 2WD with 15" stock wheels. Does that matter?

If by "this" you mean the recall, Yes, I recently bought a 1998 4runner, took it to the local Toyota dealership and they did the recall from 2002. Surprised the hell out of me! New springs, bump stops and some kind of rubber spring-looking thing that is in the center of the coil spring. Rides a little stiffer, but no bottoming out and it sits higher in the rear, like it is supposed to, I guess.

I went on the main Toyota website and put in my VIN to check for outstanding recalls and found it there. The dealership had no choice but to do the work. This recall is a type that does not expire.

FWIW, I have a '99 that doesn't qualify for the recall, but had the same sagging rear end. In fact, I see lots of T4Rs on the road with sagging rear ends.

Originally I installed a set of 2" daystar spacers, but that didn't fix the problem with the worn springs, just the height, and I bottomed out a few times. Not good.

I ordered a set of 2" lifted springs by OME (before ARB bought them) along with a longer rear brake hose and now my T4R has the a more even stance and the correct rate rear springs.

NB, I also installed a 1" spacer in the front to level the truck out more, which makes it look lifted (which is fine by me) but when I swap the struts soon I will get the correct (lifted) springs and forgo the spacers.
