ABS Just F@#$ed my front bumper

as far as the "unintended Acceleration" issues are refuring to the floor mats catching the peddle. but the recall I was talking about had to do with the sensors in the pedal and the computer. The car would be stuck in the full open slot and ppl would trow it into neutral and blow the engine just to stop. if they were that lucky

ok i agreed with most of what you were saying up until this point.

no car will still accelerate while still in neutral and you will definitely not blow the engine from holding it at redline for short period of time. that is total BS

Sure, the OP may simply have a malfunction but that's not a reason to go ballistic on him. I have never slammed on the brakes on our 4r because I'm such an awesome driver I never get into those situations to begin with. My GF says the thing stops very well in panic situations though. If the OP has a fault I'd say he was going too fast. There's no way a normal speed into a parking space can totally destroy a bumper.

The unintended acceleration is a real phenomenon though. Here's a guy who drove his Avalon to the dealer at full throttle because they kept calling him a liar or an idiot. Toyota Avalon displays unintended acceleration without floor mat

and another person putting words in my mouth... did i say the bumper was totally destroyed no I didn't I said I have to find a new one. and I plan to post pic so ppl can tall me if its the whole thing that has to be replaced or just a pop out or something.

I didn't mean (although I said it that way) that the car would keep gaining speed in neutral. but they never had it at redline for a short period... they freaked out and when neutral didn't make the noise go away they would panic and not think to shut off the car... although I don't think I would want to shut off my car coming down from sunset point.

The harder you push on the brake pedal the more the abs bleeds the pressure from the locked wheel.

When the apply lightly and the abs engages the pedal vibrates a little, but when you smash on the brakes and keep pushing against the pedal it vibrates the s**t out of your foot. It's bleeding "pumping" the brakes for you at about 5,000 times a minute.

2. I have taken action to prevent this from happening again(disables TRAC & ABS).
3. Toyoda got F@#% cuz the cars would accelerate even when in neutral.

I think you have serious emotional/mental issues to get mad at me for stating my experiences after owning my vehicle for 10 years. And calling me an idiot? Why would what I said make you mad? I've owned many Toyotas and asking them to perform a recall on a heavily noted flaw is nothing that would hurt a company, it's routine for them to put out TSB and perform recalls. That is much better than dealing with deaths as a result of a bad design.

You have not driven my truck, and I highly doubt you own one because you are just a troll. This issue has been talked about on many forums for many years. There are literally hundreds of folks on here that will back up my experiences with the 3rd gen ABS. You know nothing, you just joined this forum and have no credibility. Please other members do not respond to him or his ridiculous comments, he is a troll and he's trolling like trolls do.

I work for Toyota, and the 6 Years I have been there I have NOT heard of one single issue regarding ABS on the 3rd gen 4Runners. Plus, being in the great Canadian north winter is cold and gets icy and I'm sure many regions NW, NE area's of the States gets pummeled during winter as well. I have a 99' SR5 4WD, as well with many friends with these trucks and no one and even I don't notice any issues stopping. That being said, if you're stopping on hard packed snow or ice the ABS unit will pulsate the brakes to allow you to maintain steering control. What's the deal guys? Are you guys trying to stop on ice with mud terrains and expecting to stop on a dime or what?

I'm semi-new to the 3rd gen world. Bought mine this summer. First time I've heard of ABS issues. I guess I'm sort of unclear as to what the issue is. Haven't had any issues with mine that would cause concern. Is it an issue with all years?

did you not read that I LIVE IN MESA AZ AND IT WAS 80 TODAY. ice/water had nothing to do with it and there was no reason for the peddle to push back at me in the first place. so the new abs on the 01-02 are crap

I had a similar issue in my 99 Tacoma a few years ago. I was driving down the street and when i braked the abs made some weird noises and the brake pedal pulsed and didn't stop for a little long. I'm assuming the abs is the same in the 4runners and Tacomas. It was really weird and I was driving in 85 degree heat and on a flat surface. The abs light came on and was acting real weird after as well. I ended up replacing the ABS computer and it was fixed. (Yeah I know stupid to pay for it, but I was 18 and didn't know what was going on.)

As I was approaching a turn on a wet road I applied the brakes to slow down for the turn. I was not going too fast for the conditions. As I applied the brakes the ABS kicked in. There was no need for the ABS to kick in as I wasn't braking hard. But when the ABS kicked in at this moment it wasn't how I was used to the ABS kicking in. The pedal was pushing against me in a weird way and the truck wasn't slowing down at all. I could hear the clicking of the brakes like the ABS was trying to stop the truck, but alas it didn't at all. I pressed harder and harder with no luck. At this point I was about halfway through the turn. Due to the ABS engaging and not slowing down the truck I was now going too fast through the turn. The truck understeered and slid off the side of the road where the tires dug into the grass stopping the truck abruptly which made it flop on its side. I believe that if the ABS wouldn't have engaged I would have been able to slow down normally as I always do for that turn in the road.

I would leave to see Toyota research this problem. I stand behind their vehicles even though they do have some problems, so I expect them to stand behind their products as well.

Thank you I could not think of a better way to explane this problem. you wont be braking hard but then the truck doesn't want to slow down. the abs dose work its just working too soon and then not at all. It kicks in LONG before the tires even think to lock up and the truck will continue at the same speed no matter what you try to do.... in my case I didn't have time to reach for the e-brake

And to answer your bumper question, I think Toyota fabricated this bumper from single aluminum can and stretched then shaped it to its factory form. Tie the dented part to a heafty tree and pull the dent out in reverse. Be carefull or you'll go from an inie to an outie without even hitting the gas.

Thx for your help but I did manage to crack the Front Spoiler Lower Apron Plastic* and just bent the chrome. So I can ether pay $70+ for a new one and bend the chrome back by hand, or go to AutoZone and drop like $15 on some fiberglass & black primer paint and bend the chrome back by hand. Unless someone has any freebies out there :tongue:

P.S. if your ride is a 01-02 I will PM you a link on how to disconnect the TRAC and ABS/ or install the andymod(same pigtail I just unplugged it, plan to put it on switch so other drivers don't annoy me about it).... Now to finger out how to turn the dummy lights off

On my way to work, I cross a section of street that gets sprayed with water from in-ground sprinklers.

When I first got the truck, I was coming to the stop sign near the puddles named above, I lightly press the brakes and my the truck locks up the brakes and I skid. I was going no faster than 15mph.

I maybe unhooking the ABS...

Check your abs sensor wires, my buddy has a jeep (i know i know) but the wire was screwed up and it would lock up if he turned into a parking lot. He replaced them and all was well. Might check that.
