ABS Switch - Easy, effective and simple

After doing the mod just as you described, only the RR Diff Lock light comes on. The ABS light does not and therefor the ABS is still active.

I really want to make this work before I start snow wheeling this year. I don't have a wiring diagram.

I reviewed the wiring diagram. There is a another switch that the abs reads off of too. The is a transfer low switch that the e-locker gets info to engage itself. The ABS must work with that switch too. The gray wire (pin 8)also needs to be grounded for the abs to disengage.

If you want to test before grounding wire, Put transfer case into low and try the ABS out.

I will post the wiring diagram as soon as i can transfer pdf to jpeg files.

If this works as advertised then it is great for those prewired with an ARB. I know it is the route I would be taking if I ever picked up an ARB for the rear but for now im planning to go with an e-locker.

the kid, yeah that was one of the first things I looked at. I simply can't afford a new ARB anytime soon so unless I found one at a good price it just isn't happening. There is a bone yard about an hour from here, they have two runners in there with lockers. I talked to them and can pick up the complete rear end and locker ECU for $450. I find this route appealing because I want to regear front and rear along with replacing bearings and seals while im at it. The only problem, I need the extra money and time to go and pick the rear end up. Once thats in the garage all safe and sound I can take my time getting the rest of the stuff ready to do it all.

Time and money, two things I never seem to have enough of.

non of our rigs came prewired for an ARB, did you mean E locker?

well if you can pick up the ECU and the complete rear axle for that cost, id buy both of them and sell the other one, if im not mistaken those rear axles can sell for almost $800 complete, and if you have a matching ECU and wireing to go with it, im sure you could sell it all for $800 and that way it almost pays for both of them so you basically get your rear axle and ecu for free. just a thought, i know it easy for me to sit here an say just buy both(especially when im outta work, and havent worked in a few months). but if you can afford to swing it, it might be worth it.

Pin wire 8 is gray on taco's but blue and red on 4runners.

So ground it along with yellow and blue (pin wire 1) with the switch and it should work.

I gave that a try and no luck. I tried grounding, one at a time, all the other pins except #5 which carries a constant hot. I also tried #8 alone and with #1.

thats what me and clownmeat did on saturday cause we were thinking the same thing. Ground yellow with blue and blue with red, we grounded them at the abs ecu cause we are not wired for diff lock. Neither of us can understand why it doesnt work. one thing that we noticed is that there is power at the blue/red wire. not mutch maybe 5v. maybe it needs to be open? haven't had a chance to try it yet.

Been reading up on the ABS issue with older 3rd Gen 4runners and came across this thread.

I have a recently purchased 96 limited with the E-locker and just went out to see if using the button would disengage the ABS. First thing I discovered is that my e locker is not working. Second was that pushing the e-locker button does not turn off abs in 2h or 4H. The e-locker light blinks but the abs light does not come on and the abs is still working. In 4l the e-locker does not engage (light keeps blinking) but the ABS light comes on solidly and the abs is disabled.

Are other folks with e-lockers able to disable the abs in 4H or 2H by pushing the button?

We need videos of all of you testing this out - driving down the street, then slamming on the brakes, coming back in to try a different configuration, then driving down the street again, slamming on the brakes... I'd watch that. Bonus points for style.

I'll have to try out this mod, as I have the e-locker. Too bad Toyota didn't set the ABS to be off below ~15mph; a small little company called Subaru, with very little engineering resources compared to Toyota, was smart enough to provide this feature on my '02 Forester.

Of course, there are times I'd like ABS to be disabled above 15mph, but most of the bad effects seem to occur at the lower speeds. The ABS on my 4Runner is a little less sensitive than the Forester though, so it doesn't get activated as easy by washboard, holes, or small gravel patches.

On my truck its a blue/red stripe wire going to a little black box behind the drivers side kick panel. Snipped that and grounded it to the chassis. Once the locker is engaged the abs is disengaged and that is in any driving mode.

hey ..I just bought my 4runner 2000 ... and I did the exact step by step to cancel my abs but i only have one issue .... it dosent work at all ! .... I have the ( RR dif lock ) light on in my dash but the abs still work ... i just did a test drive after doing the rewirering and it still work anyone have a solution ?....

so call me a homo or what ever you like, but i bought the factory locking diff switch so i could try utilizing the the factory wiring to disable the ABS, and cause well it looks cool(that was the real reason). anyhow i remembered that the rear locking diff will only work when in 4lo and under 20mph. so will this also be the same for the disabled ABS? cause i want to be able to turn my ABS off when ever i want no mater what with out having to turn off my truck or go under the hood to re-hook some wires up. what do you think? will this work?

So did it end up working? Least if you decide to go locker route you already have an oem switch. Just curious because I was thinking of something similar, but I have readily access to getting a whole rear end with elocker unit.

reviving an useful old thread and big thanks to Singtoe.

Before Christmas, I did the elocker swap and I finished up the wiring today. I also followed the singtoe's direction and added an abs disable switch.

Few pointers based on my experience:

1. You have to do the blue wire mod (grey wire mod in tacoma) which turns off the 4Lo safety. (ground pin #8)

2. You do NOT cut the RLP (pin #1) when you add this switch. You tap the RLP wire from the switch and the wire from the elocker (I had the elocker pre-wire) to the RLP wire.

3. I used the 91-92 window lock switch.

I am now ready for snow!!
