Can anyone explain exactly what purpose the "Auto" setting on the AC/Heat controls serves in the 2004 SR-5?

To elaborate on that, just setting the temperature will adjust the heating/cooling blend to maintain that temp. the AUTO setting also automates the fan speed, vent selection, A/C, and recirculation depending on interior temp, outside temp, and desired interior temp. At least, that's what happens on the Limited; I'm assuming SR5 is the same way.
Indeed it is. Also I noticed that the auto setting has a more analog control over the fan. It can get it to speeds that are between the settings that we have control over.

Thanks, great idea and exactly what made logical sense to me, it just doesn't seem to work that way. Not a drivability problem, just trying to clarify intent. I feel certain their is something wrong with my system but it is, as yet, an un-solved mystery. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe I'm just expecting too much based on this vehicle's weird characteristics vs. all other vehicles I've owned. Truly a new learning experience. IE: I'm still un-happy that the vehicle can't clear the windshield while providing warmth. Not un-common, too many bells and whistles not enough simple setting, switches/controls and effective operation. Very typical of the Japanese mentality. Great manufacturers, not so great original technical designers. Not an insult, just an observation after working with them and their equipment for years. Too many video game characteristics in products that demand reliable, common sense systems. Looking pretty and playing bells and chimes isn't enough, it needs to meet the minimums at the very least.

What do you think is wrong with the system? I agree that it's not very intuitive to how I would do things; when it's cold, I don't want my feet getting heat and my body/hands getting nothing!
FYI, you can get windshield defrost and foot heat on the dial (I'm guessing they figured the airflow from the dash would warm the driver/passengers too).
I've had the best luck getting the system to work "right" by just selecting a temp and manually controlling the vent selection. When the temp has reached homeostasis the AUTO button actually does a decent job of keeping things there comfortably, but it's not very good for the transients.

I found it too weird...
I played with it a bit after first getting my T4R but it always seemed to finnicky like the fan would be on full blast dehydrate mode or not on at all. Now I just adjust it manually because I don't have the time to figure it out.
If it's acting funny you can try to clean the thermistor temp sensor in the cab just behind the dash by your right knee. Mine was covered in gunky dust.
