ac compressor change questions.

Well my ac compressor clutch went out the other day. Icy cold air and then the fuse blew. Looks like the bearing in the clutch went out. I thought no problem ill just change the clutch. Well part of the outer groove that the outer snap ring fits in broke off when I was prying the pully off of the compressor:doh: So now I get to replace an otherwise perfectly good compressor. Will I need to remove the radiator and come out forward or can I remove the power steering pump and get it out from the top? Lets just say that accidently I lose all of my freon. When I put the new compressor on, how many cans of r134 will it need and will I need to add oil back to the system. The compressor didnt go bad so there shouldnt be trash in the lines. Do I need to change the dryer or expansion valve?

I dont guess there is any hope of just replacing the clutch and getting the outer snap ring to hold with only a little over half of the groove?

You will lose all your freon, it's a gas. Environmentally you should have it evacuated first so that it doesn't get in the air. There should be a sticker in your engine bay that says how much freon is needed to fill it back up.

As for oil, it should come with some oil in it but you still need to add some. I'm not sure how much but it says in the FSM.

You can kind of squeeze it and wiggle the compressor out through the bottom without having to remove anything.

Drier should be replaced anytime you open the system and replace the o-rings as well.
 
If you change it on your own make sure you get everything cleaned up. I don't want any pets or kids getting to that freon. You'll also need to vacuum check it to make sure you don't have any leaks prior to charging it. It's an easy job if you don't care about the environment.
 
Ok I got the compressor and drier changed last night. It is a trick but you can get the thing out through the bottom. I borrowed a set of gauges and a vacume pump from work. I know to vacume the system for at least 30 minutes. Ive done some searching and found a link to the FSM that was dead. What should my pressures read to know when im getting close? How many oz does it normally hold?

But there should be a label in the engine compartment--left front as you stand in front--with the best info. Dose an empty system by weight of refrigerant, not by pressure.

What are you doing about oil?
 
Well I'm not holding a vacume. I'm pretty sure it's in the o rings for the ac lines at the compressor. My kit came with o rings for the drier and an o ring for the manifold. I reused the old o rings on the lines. I'll get new ones tomorrow and give it another go.

Got the new orings changed last night and everything held a vacume. I put what I felt was about 1.5 cans of freon. Im blowing very cold air but im not getting any bubbles at all in the sight glass for quite a while. When it is running you see fluid running through the glass but it appears cloudy like there are lots of tiny bubbles mixed in with the freon. My gauges are sitting at between 20-25 on the low side when the compressor kicks in and around 80 on the high side. Im guessing its low but I thought these systems only held around 18-20 oz of fluid and I should have put about that much in. It was probably about 50 degrees in the shop since I had the outer doors open to vent the exhaust last night.

FSM says almost 24oz. with a +- of 1.76 oz Sounds like your close. 134a charge has to be almost dead on to get the best cooling. If your using 12oz cans then 2 cans should be perfect.
