AC Compressor is locking up when the clutch is engaged and squealing from extended non-use. Got a used replacement from a member here and wanted to tear it down and rebuild it before installation. Plus, managed to do this to my AC condenser during the TB/WP replacement:

Figured I replace the condenser and the compressor at the same time and do a general refresh of the whole system just for piece of mind. Doesn't get too hot up here in the PNW, but it's nice to have when it's needed.

Here's the thing. If done properly (using Denso A/C parts), your A/C system can outlast the remainder of the time that you own your car. I recently just replaced EVERYTHING on my 225k 'Runner for ~$430. This involved ordering all parts from RockAuto/Amazon, paying a mechanic to evacuate the system, and recharging myself after buying the Harbor Freight evacuation pump.

I would highly recommend going that route over a used compressor. If you do everything right and get a good vacuum pull on the system before recharging, the new system should last you for years and years.

Seems like a lot of work to replace the A/C compressor components when a new Denso one from RockAuto is $185. Now if we're talking about the starter, you can definitely rebuild the internals of those!
 
Ouch ! Last compressor lock up was easier (cheaper) to replace unit as parts were "unavailible" ,after inspection the scoring was also so bad it didn't make sense...
 
Maybe it's not worth the effort to rebuild, but I'm definitely going to be refreshing the entire A/C system. I just like to tinker and thought it would be a nice project to tear it down and rebuild it.

The used compressor is off of the donor for the SRQ Fabrications Ultra4 4600 3rd Gen Build. Got it and some other bits for a song from [MENTION=75445]4Running Daily[/MENTION]. The thought was to maybe take the time to rebuild it while the old one is on my rig so I can then replace everything on a free weekend. Might even install that one and rebuild my original and then switch them again, but I haven't decided yet really.

Still wondering if there's a rebuild kit specifically for the compressor. The Google machine doesn't seem to come up with much more than just the entire unit.
 
Don't open theAC compressor, just get a good used OEM compressor. The way to test is, close the discharge line by placing a finger and spin the pulley that is connected to the compressor about 30 - 40 degrees, and if you feel a high pressure at your finger, that is a good compressor.
 
In the process of re-sealing/re-building the replacement A/C compressor. Bent the hell out of the snap rings that hold the clutch plate and stator while taking it apart though. I've got the part numbers for these, but can't seem to find a reasonable place to get them from. Camelback and most other places online have them for less than a buck a piece, but then want $10+ for shipping. I'm wondering if a kit like this would work: 300-Piece Snap Ring Shop Assortment - 18 Sizes

Part numbers are: 90099-07114 and 90099-07125 (or 90099-07065)

Anyone have another source for these? Local Toyota dealer doesn't seem to have these either.

I totally agree with Zachary.Mikel. Time is money and rebuilding things does not often save that much money because of the extensive time involved. Then, there is always the lingering question as to whether the "rebuild" works. Having essentially installed a whole new AC system with new parts, and at a price that is reasonable ($400-$500) the "peace of mind" of having a new system that will last for years to come is worth its weight in gold.
