AC Compressor stuck "on" 2000 SR5

Okay, sorry if this has been covered somewhere else.

I think my AC compressor sticks on for some reason. Maybe it just circulates?

I'll be driving down the road and I'll hear a slight sound like when the AC compressor clutch engages, like a faint "ch" sound. I used to notice it when I would turn the AC on, and you'd feel the engine change just a small amount to the additional load.

But now, I think it's on all the time, or at least doesn't seem to change when I actuate the push button. The AC and heater controls seem to work fine, other than that.

Has anyone run into that issue?

You can check it out but looking at the front of the compressor where the pulley is.

One part of the pulley should not turn when the A/C is off.

When it's on the one part should stop and start turning as the A/C cycles.

I can't remember if it's the inside of the pulley or the outside but it's sort of obvious when you watch it.

That's a great idea. That front wheel shouldn't spin if the AC clutch is disengaged. Thanks.

I have a '97 limited and I experienced something similar a couple years back. After looking through the manual, I found out that if the air selector was in the windshield position, full defrost, the AC would automatically come on to help in dehumidifying the air.

Like stated above me OP do you have defrost on? It activates AC if defrost is on.
