Others have done this but for what it's worth, here's my experience with adding USB power ports in my 4th gen 4Runner. It's a very easy mod that didn't take 2 hours total despite the problems with the plug, painting, etc.

Needing Some Help

Feeling like a dummy here, so appreciate any help. I tried putting mine in just now, but it's not working. It didnt come with any instructions or label for the wiring.

I'm assuming it's like my stereo, where the red wire is the 12V power and the black in the ground. Wouldn't it be fine to just tap them into the red and black wiring running to the 12V cigarette adapter? It has the same wires and purpose. I figure they're the same thing.

I'm trying to grab a picture of my wiring in the center console but my computer isn't cooperating.

I did mine a while back,.. I have 2 USB ports in my Dash,.. on the passenger side (http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Sea-Syst...=1451334558&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=Ble+Sea+USB) and I have 2 in the unused center console opening (Amazon.com: Mictuning Toyota USB Charger for Toyota Switch Plant - with Fuse 2.3ft Wiring 5V 2.1/1.2A Dual USB Power Socket: Cell Phones & Accessories). All work great. I also have 2 USB in the cargo area. Wife and I have phones,.. Ipads etc and it's nice to be able to have stuff charging as we use others.. and also to provide charging for people that may have forgotten their chargers.

Looks great. I'm going to install mine this weekend. Great tip about painting the top cover. I'm planning to swap out the LEDs for some orange ones.

I'm interested in doing this too. Will you provide some details once you get it done?

Thanks Bluesky. I had looked at that earlier but clearly didn't pay enough attention. It mentions the rust-colored wire as the positive, but didn't mention the negative and I didn't look closely enough to where the tap was.

I just tried it and it worked out well. Then the crimp cap came loose. I'm gonna have to go get soldering stuff and re-work a few of the wires now, b/c I severed the cigarette lighter (never use it & don't want it - at least not right there) to make room on the wire for this new connection.

So I just got this in thing the mail. New to the 4 runner scene and would really like to do this mod. My question however, is does this charge up your phone pretty quick? Just don't want to go through installing it and all to find out i can barely charge up my phone. Any insight?

Charges as well as a wall charger. 1a. Not 2.1a. Worth plugging in for my 30 min commute.

Would like to see a picture of the new location for clarity, as I don't like having the DAC down on the console. My dogs have a tendency to stand their front paws on the console storage lid and will from time to time slip or step down onto the console and press the DAC switch. Not a big deal but I don't like seeing lights flash on my dashboard unexpectedly.

No offense to each is their own but there is no reason the dog should even be up there let alone on the console. I have two shepherds and they are not permitted to be any where near the front even more so when driving. Just like a kid they should be secured. JUST saying since i have dogs with me every day all day and Id feel like shit if i got into a crash and they got hurt

I did this mod also awhile ago BUT.. have since removed it since i brought my 08 to toyota and they needed to do a update in the computer. Computer blocked the update due to the usb being added on something with it being the campus system sensing something not belonging there. Once it was remove the update went thru no issue

The dust plugs ordered from Amazon finally arrived from Hong Kong (seriously) and this is how they look. I have 8 left over so if anyone wants a couple, PM me your address and I'll drop them in the mail when I get a chance.

They have small ridges on top (visible if you look closely) that help with pulling them out of the sockets.

FYI, the power is not on in this pic but when it is, there's a faint blue glow around the edges from the LEDs in the socket.

I'm afraid someone with more knowledge of auto electrical systems will have to answer that one.

I just soldered a pin to each wire of the usb plug and slid them into the whitr plug inside the console. Not cutting or splicing.

LOL at this mod somehow lowering the value of the vehicle.

For anyone else reading this, I thought taking power from the unused connector in the center console sounded like a great idea. Only to find out that it's actually a dimmed power source not just a key on power.

Whether you have your headlights on or off, if the dash light dimmer wheel is turned down low, you won't have enough amperage to charge two devices and will it'll flash the dash lights as well.

I'll be rewiring to the cig lighter 12v wires instead.

Rewiring just the positive to the rust colored wire also did not do the trick. It seems that the power from the unused connector in the center console is fine (make sure it's the power wire and not the two green illumination wires that only get power when headlights are on) the ground in the unused connector however caused my USB's to flicker when the dimmer was set low. I didn't dig into wiring diagrams to figure out why, just wired both power and ground to the cig lighter and everything works great.

The unused plug for the smoker kit is not dimmable.

As a follow-up, there may be one prong of the plug that is tied to the dimmer as the smoker kit may have a dimmable light. But there is at least one wire that has constant power in the acc/on position. I have used it for over six months with no issues.

As a follow up to my post as well, there is a keyswitch power in the unused connector that should work but it's one of the ground wires from that connector (found by testing continuity with chassis ground) that caused my dimmer issue. Is I used chassis ground, no issue, if I used this connector "ground" in the connector I could control the brightness of my test light with the dimmer. So we're both right/wrong lol, good info thanks!

Thanks to all for the great idea and helpful pics and narrative. I just completed my dual USB install, and it went well. I got the part for .99 on Ebay including shipping. I ordered 10 of the dust plugs for .99.

While I had everything apart, I replaced the clear bulb dipped in orange that lights up the gear indicators on the console. I replaced it with a white LED bulb. The LED base was a little wider than the stock bulb, so I ground down both sides of the base to make it fit. Much brighter in the light, so I'll see what it looks like tonight.

Any pics of the shifter bulb led mod ?

Also is there a way to splice into a constant power source for the usb mod? I want to have things charge with the ignition off, thanks for any info you can share .
