Adding Homelink to 3rd gen

I was surprised to find that this 3rd gen I just bought did not come with Homelink since my 99 RX300 has it. I looked for a sunroof control that had it already but I had no luck. So I bought a Camry sun visor with Homelink and installed it in the business card holder of my 4runner.

I don't like the color difference and I am not a fan of the side mount but it sure beats a giant garage door opener.

Has anyone else done this, is there a unit that does fit that I can buy?

I dont have a sunroof.. But in that area/sunglass area there is enough space to put a garage door opener. It also had attachments to extend the casing . so if you were to press it. it will hit the garage door button.

Dude you could certainly just paint the plastic piece to match better.

Both krylon and SEM make paint specifically designed for interior plastic pieces.

I have changed my mind, I don't like the way the entire install works, so I just ordered the parts to start over and try something else.

Keep in mind for like $15 you can buy a universal two-button remote from home depot. It's not very big. When we bought our house, the absent-minded PO didnt leave us any openers. So I bought 2 universal ones and programmed them. It was really easy.

Of course the dude stopped by the next week to drop off the old openers :/

None of the 3rd gens came with them as far as I know. I tried to find one with it installed and I was unable to locate a single case.





Here is my new install. Other than the color being a little light it looks like I came this way. I'm happy with it.

If you type in revolving code Homelink on eBay you will find several of them. About $20. It is far from plug and play, and wiring is the easy part. You tap into your dome light hot, and ground to your dome light mount.

The hard part is mounting it in the roof, you have to extend the buttons on some models, and in my case I had to use some very hard blue foam to keep the the roof from pushing up when I hit the button.
it is not hard to do, just a lot of head scratching to make it all fit and feel right.

I am the 3rd owner but it is a very clean stock Runner with nothing modified So I am guessing it is factory but could be wrong.

Yes wiring is super easy. And they are programmed to work. All you have to do is pair it to your garage door. It's a pretty simple process..

Hold two outside buttons until the the light blinks fast to reset Homelink.

Hold down button you want to use for your garage door.....when light starts blinking slowly, hold your garage door opener 1" away and press and hold button (still holding the home link button down) until the Homelink light blinks fast.

That's it on most models of doors. But on some there is two more steps..

Press the learn button on door opener. Then quickly return to your vehicle and hold down the button you just programmed until the light blinks fast to confirm they are paired.

NOTE: some openers (genie for instance). You have to press and hold the Homelink button on this final step for 5 second and release 3 times.

i live in an apartment complex so i wonder if it will work? i have a garage but no opener for it. i use the key pad on the side to open it.

Not sure about that, you can look at the garage door opener and see if it has an antenna, but I would have to guess it does not....they would not want every tenant from the past to be able to open the door.
