Adding OEM Nav to '03 with JBL radio --- Need specifics

I tried looking through the posts, but seemed to get different answers as to which models to get, if my amp would work or if I needed something else, yada yada yada...

So, specifically... if I wanted to add the OEM Nav unit to my '03 with JBL radio, what Nav unit do I need to buy, and what additionally needs to be connected or purchased to make it work?

Thanks in advance. I'm trying to put a price together to see if it's worth it or not. Also, I found that the Radio-Bezel is different for the stock JBL radio, than the non-JBL AND Nav version bezels... is that a piece I can just buy, or do I need to find a complete new bezel?

The 4Runner came from the factory with the E7005 unit in the beginning. Then changed to E7008 after the 2006 refresh. Because you have the JBL amp, the NAV units mentioned in the thread are Plug N Play. You WILL have to splice into the VSS wire, Backup signal wire and Reverse signal wire. If you do NOT connect them, the NAV will work, but rerouting feature doesn't work and when driving, the feature that tells you what road you are on doesn't work either. Connecting these 3 things enable the NAV to track itself better, thus ensuring the NAV properly works. Depending on what unit you get, you can get the bluetooth/voice nav to work, it's not difficult. Toyota OEM NAV unit range from $650 to $1200 on ebay. Depends on you on whether you think its worth it. I personally love the OEM look. Regarding the bezel, this thread could help ya:

Yeah, I have one question. I have a 2003 with JBL. What nav unit has the orange buttons already and also has the bluetooth and I was the USB input from the newer ones where I can plug my iphone into it via USB, That is a MUST!

Try getting the E7008. They were originally installed in later year 4Runners. They are also plug and play (for the most basic functions). They have the orange LEDs, bluetooth (not USB, I don't think that was ever an option from Toyota, however the aftermarket offers TONS of solutions for this). Best place to get is ebay. Be patient, they are not always out there. Expect to pay about $700-800 for one. Be sure they include the GPS antenna.

Okay, so I just bought a E7008 off ebay for $500. It is coming off of a salvaged Limited 4Runner. Praying that it works, it said it was tested and worked and comes with a 120 day warranty so hopefully I'm not getting shafted.

So assuming they are just going to take the head unit out of the wrecked 4runner what all should I be looking to buy to actually make this thing work. And if you know some good places to find them let me know...

Also I do want to have USB input, what is the best aftermarket device for this? I want a pretty good one that will support the text to be displayed on the screen along with steering wheel controls working and really good audio.

If you already have the JBL amp, no, you don't need to get a new(er)one. If after you make all the connections (note: not all connectors on the HU will connect to the 4Runner. This is because your truck wasn't wired for this option at the factory), then I would see into getting a new(er) JBL amp. ADDITIONALLY, from 2005+ (or 06), the JBL amp was slightly changed. From my research, it should STILL work. Again, all the audio/steering wheel controls should work.

The newer amp is for the voice nav feedback right. I'm probably not even going to be using the nav i like it mainly for touch screen radio. So if i don't need the nav I probably won't need to change amps.

Oh and as for that bezel that goes around the nav radio. Where exactly can u find that. Like part number or something. from toyota is it the whole silver dash assembly that you have to change or is there some type of oiece that just fits around the radio. I know the aftermarket ones fit around the radio but you said u had to do a lot of modifying to get it to work, and I want it to look as good as possible.

You are correct, it appears as though your 03 doesn't have the amp to make the voice nav to work. There is a way around this, as some have just wired up a speaker and placed it under their seat to hear it.

Okay thanks man I'm taking my whole dash and everything out now. The new one should be in this afternoon. So wish me luck

1.Steering wheel controls work perfect, actually better than before because now u just tap channel up down once and it goes to next preset.
2.all 10 speakers are working perfectly. Actually sounds a lot better than before.

Things I need to do still are:
1. Fix the gap around the stereo since I have a limited
2. Tap into the speed wires for nav
3. Plug in my gps antenna and find somewhere to put it.
4. Figure out the Bluetooth steering wheel controls.
5. Figure out how to get the voice issue for nav setup correctly
6. Order my gta car kit for my iPhone connection
7. Find a Bluetooth mic and wire it up
8. Find the wiring harness for the aux input that goes in the armrest. I don't know exactly how I'm going to do this yet. I might not even do it since I'm going to have a iPhone input.
9.Resave all the money I just blew basically.

If any of u know easy fixes for all of this let me know.

Great to hear! Sounds like you are loving it.

As far as the rest of the unsolved issues, those threads address them (bluetooth, bezel, wiring tapping into VSS, Brake, Reverse). The rest is gravy (aux input). For the GPS antenna, I ran the wire under (behind) the glove box, up the passenger A pillar, over toward the rear view mirror. Put double sided molding tape on the shiny side of the antenna and stick on the windshield.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but those speed ratings are from the GPS, not the VSS. I find that puzzling b/c there is no physical connection/communication between the HU and your truck regarding speed. Long story short: the HU needs BOTH GPS and vehicle speeds.

Anyway, connect them nevertheless. Sure, the GPS will function fine (seemingly), but while on a programmed trip, if you go "off route", you will see that it WON'T "reroute" you. Been there, done that.

Anyway, sounds like you are enjoying your NAV! :thumb:
