Adding spoiler....is it hard??

I've done a search...but there is nothing on this topic about installing one.

My '04, which I'm picking up tomorrow, has no spoiler. The two mods that I want to do right off the bat are the LED factory mod, and adding a spoiler.

Is this hard to do? Do you recommend a dealer or a body shop install it? I haven't got a clue as to where to even start.

I was quoted one hour labour to install at the dealer. There is information on installing on this site, as it involves drilling holes. I never did find out if the factory spoiler had led lights, and have abandoned my interest in installing the spoiler.
 
I have installed my wing and its a spoiler depot wing. I have installed wings b4 and i Didn't like their method of aligning the holes.

I wouldn't recomend it if your not good with tools and patient with MEASURING. You also need 2 people so that might be a hassle.,

I also spent like $15 on a new dril bit and some rubber plugs. If you only spend like $40 - 70 it might be worth it.
 
Doing more research, spoilerdepot has the best prices....Ebay has some very cheap ones, but I just don't trust them.

I've called a couple of auto body shops, and they're kind of wishy washy....they said to bring in the spoiler to see what kind of quality it is and they may do it.

Any more advice??
 
i am very happy with my spoiler depot wing. the paint matchs and seems to hold up very well.(even when i hit it with my snowboard on accident...OUCH). JUst have the body shop install it.

It doesn't have the hump like the 06(which i thnk is SWEET). It does have an led on the lower edge. I have seen some 4runner wings have the brake light mounted on the center/middle back of the spoiler. Which i didn't like.

These spoilers are all cosmetic, they don't serve a purpose in my opinion. It does help the value of the truck considering they charge an arm and a leg at the dealer. It might help me sell my truck later.



BUT, I DO HAVE ONE!!!! and i paid a less then a quarter of the price the stealer was asking at the time.
 
Well I finally bit the bullet and ordered it from spoilerdepot. Should be here early next week. I'm just crossing my fingers that the body shop that I called will like the construction of it and will agree to install it.

Don't worry about installing the aftermarket spoiler. I did the installation in my complex parking lot by myself. The hardest part (psychologically) was drilling the holes into the liftgate. The best piece of advice I would give you is to be sure to buy a larger drill bit or grind the inner hole opening in the RHS (passenger) liftgate so that the screw head will fit through it. Be careful not to drop the screw into the liftgate inner well or you will have to take apart the door.

This was the first mod I did when I bought my truck new back in early 2004. It took me about 1 1/2 hours to complete the installation (I took my time to be more careful). I also purchased my wing from spoilerdepot.com and have not had any problems with it or LED brake lamp display. I left the factory rear brake lamp connected and just spliced into the wiring for the wing's LED brake lamp. Good luck and don't fret over this installation.....it's easier than it looks. Do NOT overpay the stealership to do this mod that you can do yourself. Every time I look at my wing I get self gratification knowing I did the install myself.
 
Same deal here my 04. Added one from spoiler depot. the only mistake I made was not checking the clearence when the back was fully open. I put it too far back. Now I have one extra hole. It comes with little studs that you put into the bolt holes. Line upt the spoiler and tap the top - works like a center punch. Take it off drill into your new car and bolt it down.
 
Anyone have a diagram or pictures on which wire(s) to splice into to wire the brake light on these aftermarket spoilers?

Kind of an old thread you dug up but I posted pics of my install. Here's the thread. In it I mention that the wiring is the easiest part.

The electrical connecting was easy. Pull off the big rectangular square box on the left side [of the gate] and spice the red wire [from the spoiler] to the green wire and the black wire to the black wire.

This is the thread I read when I selected which spoiler to buy.

your'e not talking about the spoiler with the hump.. these are more functional than the earlier flat ones.. it directs the air to the rear glass so it doesn't get that dusty back there..
 
I installed mine but be very careful on a couple of things and do exactly as the instructions say.. One thing is I used clear silicone and put it on the head of my screw to make it stick to the screwdriver because if you get halfway through your back door and the screw falls off the screwdriver "your screwed' cause it's inside the door for good. Make sure you hang on to your drill when your on the inside of the door drilling your hole because the bit will want to run all the way through to the outside very quickly and it's a larger bit than your outside hole that was drilled. Mine looks good and I personally think it changed the looks quite a bit. It was worth the $125.00

It is not hard, just be patient and measure 10 times before drilling the holes.
