Advice for 5th Gen Build

I would recommend the Baja rack for 2 reasons:

1) I heard GOBI is backordered multiple months and they have a habit of raising there internet prices....

2) For the price of a GOBI, you could get the Baja long-rack w/ RIGID lights for roughly the same price as the $1,600 of a GOBI.

I admit that if you have the money (and time to wait) for a Gobi then that would be the way to go. But Baja has an excellent rack for the money and its hard to argue with the $600 price delta.

I plan on purchasing a Baja rack with a pair of 6-inch and single 10-inch RIGID SR LED light bars. I should be under the $1,600 mark (or there about.)

Definitely purchase these items through TotalAutomotivePerformance (a sponsor here on the forum). They can offer the BEST deals on RIGID lighting. I believe they may have a Group Buy for Baja in the works as well so definitely shoot him a PM if you're interested. I bought my ICON stage 2 through them and got an amazing deal. As far as ride quality goes, ICON kits beat pretty much everything out there. Since you're looking at OME, the stage 1 might be your best option although I would heavily consider goes for the stage 2. (Yes, they are very pricey but trust me it'll be worth it in the long run). [MENTION=118209]Ron4RNevada[/MENTION]. Yeah, I agree. I've done some things with it already I'm shocked it handled in it's stock form. I know I'm going to do the the larger tires and the black rims. I want the black rims for the look, and the larger tires for better traction since I only really drive it off road.

I'm not convinced I need the lift. But, I'm not a huge fan of the suspension, it's REALLY bouncy on the SR5. I'm not sure if OME is going to give me the ride I want, so wanted to get other's input who have installed it. If they are happier with it, and I'm going to change the suspension, I'll go with the lift.


What about the roof rack? Does anyone have any experience or preference for them? As I said, I want the sunroof expansion so I have full cargo space. I'm also considering the ability to sleep on the rack with some form of tent. I'm not sure yet, since if we want to drive that makes getting mobile again a bit of a pain.

I just spent a week in the Telluride, CO area with my stock 4Runner. I did 3 passes and some other off-roading around Alta lakes. After scraping a few times and getting stuck in the mud, I've decided I definitely need the following.

A 3" lift
285 Ko2 tires.

I believe I can't put 285/70/17 on a TRD wheel, they seem to require a 17x8 wheel, while the TRD wheels are 17x7. Is that correct?



I purchased a highlift jack with the comealong/winching kit and a 30 ft chain. While it does require a bit of muscle, it worked like a champ and got me out of the mud both times. I highly recommend it as a low cost alternative to an aftermarket bumper and winch.

However, I've read some horror stories of cracked Fuel wheels, as well as the lugs holes not drilled properly. Apparently they're made in China, and aren't of the best quality.


I personally don't care for the TRD black wheels, I want something wider than a 17x7 wheel. Does anyone have aftermarket wheels that are solid construction? I intend to take mine out over some gnarly rocks, and I need to make sure my wheels can stand up to the abuse.

I see you've only had it a couple weeks. I'd suggest you drive it for about six months - in all the conditions you plan on using it in. THEN decide what you really need. It's damned capable just as it sits.

In other words, drive it as is. After six months anything left intact is good enough. Anything you've broken off needs to be replaced. :thumb:

Lots of people run the 285's on the TRD wheels, or other 7" wide wheels with no issues. I have them on mine and love it.

There are all sorts of good wheels out there in your size requirement. Go read through a bunch of the build threads and see what catches your eye or seems popular. I've only seen one other set of what I use in the wild on a FJ. Mine are one piece aluminum and quite solid, but they are easily scarred by rocks. You might want to look for something with an added faux deadlock ring so as you scar them up you can just hopefully order new rings.

Hey guys,
I've gone with the Toytec 3" lift and I couldn't be happier.

3" Lift W/ Bilstein 5100 Height Adj Coilovers FJ/4Runner

I now have Fuel Trophy D551 wheels at -6 offset with KO2 285/70/17 and adjustable upper control arms. With the adjustable arms and the 3" lift, I don't have any rub, even at full lock. The ride quality is still very comfortable on road, without the squishiness of the factory SR5 shocks. For off road, it's performed very well.



I'm getting my Gobi rack installed in 3 weeks. I'm having it made so that I can mount 6"x 2" flood lights to the sides and back for loading/unloading when camping at night. However, the cost is $200 per light (installation included). At 4 lights + front light, that's almost 1800 in additional cost to add lighting. At the moment, I just don't feel comfortable spending that kind of cash on lights that I won't use all the time.


Are there any lights you guys recommend are less expensive, but still well made? I know Rigid seems to have the best quality, and I'd prefer to not install a cheap knock off. Ultimately I want a spot/flood combo in the front, with flood on the sides and back.

One thing to consider is how much weight you are eventually going to be adding because you'll want to run different springs for adding a lot of weight vs. not. Just mentioning it as I'm learning a lot from reading around on here and talking to SR members
