After-factory moonroof...

Hi everybody....

Shopping for a 2016... but it seems you can only get a moonroof with the Premium or Limited.

However, they are quick to offer installing the moonroof on a regular SR5.

Has anybody had Toyota do this? Or seen the results?

I'm concerned it won't look the same, and possibly leak one day as well.

I just picture them taking a saw to a bueautiful new 4Runner, and it's a scary sight in my head! Despite their assurances that it will be fine.

On a related note... I don't want the Premium or Limited because I've never been a big fan of leather seats. Any converts here? They just never seem as comfortable to me.

Be very careful with this as I have not seen aftermarket sunroof,moon roof installs that hold up very well over time.

Pffft. You let someone cut a hole in the roof of a brand new vehicle and you deserve whatever you get. Factory-built sunroofs can have problems - can't imagine what some $12.50/hr. doofus could cause.

Our 2015 Trail Premiums came standard with softex not leather. We have had several vehicles with leather seats and this is our second one with softex. The softex is soft, very comfortable and, even though it is black, doesn't seem to get very warm in 90 degree temps. Try sitting in a Premium for awhile and see what you think.

Thanks... They had no Premiums on the lot, and are going to call me when they do.

Is the suspension different on the Trail? Stiffer? I'll be spending most of my time on the road.

I was considering it based on the fact that Toyota would do the work, and use Toyota parts. Still... I got on here and posted first thing.

I've had 2 different vehicles in the past with aftermarket sunroofs. Never had one problem with either one.

Factory sunroof is definitely better though.

Seat covers over the Softex would be my choice over cutting an aftermarket moon roof in... Or take off the Softex and install fabric. Cost might be the same or less....

I like the Softex and heated seats, which is why I am buying the Premium. I will rarely use the moon roof that comes with the package.

I've actually installed a few sunroofs before! Of course, this was WAY back in '88, and not many people wanted to spend a grand to get a hole cut in their vehicle's roof!

If its done by someone who's been doing them for a while, you should have no problem with it! I don't know of any dealership that installs their own OEM sunroof. In fact, the ones I've done before were for dealerships and they would just job it out to the shop I worked at back then.

As for drains, the one I installed had two tubes that I had to run down the A-pillars, so they do come with 'em if they're a good brand.

I'd say to call some car stereo/alarm shops around your area and see if they do sunroof installs, find out what brand they use, see if there's one for the 4 runner you're thinking of buying and find out what they charge to do it. Chances are, the dealership you get your vehicle from will do exactly the same thing, then mark it up 20% or more! They won't warranty it through your toyota warranty anyways, and will just have you drop the vehicle off and drive it over to wherever they had the installation done, so save yourself the headache and extra cost and get it done yourself. At least you'll know EXACTLY who is cutting the hole in your vehicle! Hell, he may even let ya watch the whole operation if you're strong enough to see it done to your new 38+ grand vehicle!:bounce:

Don't do a aftermarket moonroof/sunroof ever ! never !

I picked up my TP with black interior, in August, here in Louisiana, and on 95 degree day, the truck was not that bad and cooled off quickly, squelching my fears of a black interior.

Second, PLEASE DONT, let the dealer cut on your new truck, buy the Premium and enjoy the factory sun roof.

Totally agree , I was surprised the black softex is not that hot in the summer. Love my sun roof also
