Aftermarket Warranty Options if Factory is Expired

Hi guys,

I just purchased a used 2010 Trail Edition with 45k miles on it, so the factory warranty is expired. Because of this, I bought a warranty from the Ford stealer I purchased the 4runner from just in case I had to buy it from the dealer. However, I probably overpaid because of this and am interested to see what other options I have if I cancel it (I'm still within 30 days).

FYI - I called Troy and Jerry and they informed me I could not purchase a warranty from them bc I've already passed the 3yr/36k mark. Jerry thought I could still purchase a "Used Platinum Warranty" from a local Toyota dealer in my state (I'm in TX). Troy said I couldn't and would have to buy from a 3rd party company.

I tried searching for this topic, but all I could find discussed buying an aftermarket warranty within the factory period. Can anyone offer me some advise?

My advise is aftermarket warranties are scams. Just get an emergency savings going and if something happens pay for it.

I've thought about canceling the warranty outright and not getting another one, but I worry about the 4 wheel drive controls and the computer. I had a 2001 4runner sport prior and had no issues until 110k miles. From 110k - 140k I had to reseal the radiator, get a new antenna, fix the radio baclight that went out, fix a leak in the sunroof, and my cruise control went out (never fixed). Those repairs didn't add up to $1,000 but I just worry about the new technology.

Anyone else have suggestions or has anyone else purchased a warranty that's in my similar situation?

I would stay away from aftermarket warranties. I believe you can cancel almost any warranty within 30 days.
Toyota has a 'certified used car' warranty which you can get when you buy a used car from Toyota dealership but I guess there is a chance that you can get it as well, maybe just pay extra $ for the 'certified used car' inspection. Just call couple Toyota dealerships and let us know.

I'm interested in your findings. I just bought a 2012 4R Limited last week at Toyota of Dallas and am cancelling the MPP ext wty they sold me and buying a Toyota ext wty from one of the sources here.

FYI, Toyota of Dallas said they don't sell the Toyota Ext Wty - did you get the same answer from them? I would like to know if any dealers in Dallas sell the Toyota ext wty or are they all offering the third party ones?

I ended up with a third party extended warranty...I THINK that the company name was Fidelity; I'll be able to verify tonight.
The coverage seemed pretty thorough as it was listed as an "exclusionary" plan...basically everything bumper to bumper with the exception of certain wear items specifically listed on the contract. I'll update as soon as I can get to the contract if you'd like.

"bumper to bumper" seems to be a decent coverage but how about all the fine
print about service and maintenance required in order to be covered under a warranty. Does Fidelity have it?

I've spoken with two dealers in the Dallas area so far. Here are the quotes I've received so far for a "Platinum Toyota Extra Care vehicle service agreement". This pricing is for the 4runner AFTER the 3yr/36k warranty has expired. Also, all of these are $0 deductable.

First dealer (Cowboy Toyota):
4yr/50k - $1,996
5yr/60k - $2,248

2nd Dealer (Toyota of Plano):
4yr/50k - $1,650
5yr/60k - $1,795

The first dealer said he was only making $50 off the warranty he was selling me (guess that was BS). The 2nd dealer original stated $1,995 for the 5yr warranty and then came down for me when I met him in person. I'm going call a couple more places to get more pricing.

Any thoughts?

I have Toyota of Plano down to $1,695 for the Toyota Extra Care Platinum Warranty. It's good for 5 years/60,000 miles and has a $0 deductable. It covers virtually everything besides brake pads, oil changes, etc (normal upkeep).

I'm going to see if I can get the price down a little more and will let you know.

Oh and I was able to cancel the 3rd party warranty I bought at the Ford dealership when I purchased my used TE. The lady said you can cancel at anytime during the warranty term.

that is crazy! stick that money in a bank and sit on it "IN CASE" you need a repair. the drive train is lifetime for 08 and new toyotas so why waste your money..... aside from that I hope you got a hella deal on a 10 with fricken 45k miles on it

Toyota doesn't offer a lifetime warranty on the drivetrain--the warranty is 60mnths/60k.

I beg to differ although it seems to be dealer specific... but I definitely have a lifetime powertrain warranty on my T4R purchased from Wesley Chapel Toyota in Tampa Florida.

Dude that price is outrageous. I took the advice from the board and contacted Jerry Johnson of Midwest Superstore in Kansas...below is his e-mail response.

If you have a 4WD your prices may be slightly higher, but you could still purchase an 8/125K warranty for over $200 less than the 5/100K offered by Toyota of Plano. I've read many posts/threads about ext wtys on this board and if I decide to buy one it will be from this guy...he has a lot of good references on this board and was very helpful when I talked to him in person. You can buy from him all the way up until your 3/36 expires. He said prices change usually in the late summer so these prices should be good until July or so.

Give him a call or email him...it will be well worth your time.

Read the thread, this is in regard to buying a Toyota Platinum Warranty AFTER the factory 3yr/36k has expired. I spoke to Jerry about this and he said he could NOT sell me a warranty. He said after 3yr/36k the warranty has to be purchased locally and will be more expensive. So, unfortunately I cannot buy one from Jerry since he's in KS.

I've got Toyota of Plano down to $1,600 now and that's the lowest they will go. Other local Toyota dealers wouldn't go below $1,900. I'm trying to decide what to do now.

Power train through Toyota is 60k.

I think I got a pretty good deal on my 2010 4Runner Trail Edition.

Do you plan on modifying your 4runner? If so they may not want to cover damage with a warrenty if you have a lift etc. My mom had a aftermarket warrenty on her minivan and the company went out of business leaving them with nothing. There was a lawsuit started but my moms warrenty time was almost over so she did not get involved.
