Aged Tires: A Driving Hazard? (MUST READ)

I'm surprised this seems to have just become news,this problem was going on back in the late '90s when I heard of it but even my dad mentioned the tire date thing to me back in the early '90s so I've always paid attention to the dates when i bought new tires.

I just checked my Revos
Code 4005 = 40th week of 2005 (mfg date) I installed them 806 = which would be the which would be the 8th week of 2006.
Made in Japan is also something I did not know , but found in the fine print.

I also checked my other set of Bridgestone AT ( non Revos ) on the ever so capable off road expedition / race vehicle Ford Escape.....lol.
Code of 0805 = 8th week of 2005 , which is approx. time they were installed , so they were fresh for the off road racing circut.:D

by the way, i see you are very knowledgeable and informed, so don't mind if i ask you a question: what brand name would you recommend for a 265/75/16 tire size - hwy, quiet type (not very expensive). i know there are sooo many threads with tire subjects, and that's what makes it more confusing. :)

If you do not off-road much, then i would recommend: Yokohama Geolander H/T-S (cheap & good), Michelin Cross Terrain (probably best, but expensive), Bridgestone Dueler H/L (good & not too expensive). BTW, if you do not off-road, then i would stick with stock size instead of upsizing to 265/75/16 to keep good fuel economy.

the reason I'm looking for hwy. tires is because the car that i just bought came with kind of off-road tires: 265/75/16 and i thought that is the standard size. it's a 2001 4x4 sport edition. i thought the sport edition comes with this tire size.

The biggest tire from factory for the 4runner was/is: 265/70/16 (31"). 265/75/16 is NOT factory size. Quickest way is to check your driver's side door jam to see what size tire your 4runner came with.

Good: better fuel economy, better acceleration, better handling and braking (due to less unsprung weight), speedometer is more accurate with acutal speed...but mostly, you will notice better pickup when you press the gas pedal.

Bad: less tire choices in stock size (esp. if you buy all-terrains or mud terrain tires), 0.5" less ground clearance, less cool look, worst fuel economy, etc..

wait... how can bad fuel economy be part of the bad? especially when you said the good news is better fuel economy. Was that an error or am I failing at logic?

20/20 tire video

Good post, I never new that either. I just bought '05 4runnner se V8 with the original tires on it. I was already shopping for new tires, but I thought I could wait until after the winter. Now I'm thinking twice.
 
i'mma check my new tires when the sun comes up. Also gonna check my spare which has been there since 2003. lol

Yeah I'm in desperate need of new tires. The dot on my bfg's is 899=eighth week of 1999. But suprisingly they still have like new tread but are hard as a rock so I'm gonna get some new ones this comming month after the 1st of the year
 
wow, that is scary and informative. i am running my spare wheel right now, and although its the same size as a regular stock tire, im still pretty worried, Why? b/c i bought the car back in 2001 as a used car. so its been 9 years, and who knows how long that spare tire has been there b4 i bought it.


also, how long does an average tire last? b/c what if a tire can last like 6 years, would it be considered dangerous if u ran it for 6 years? or is this only for tires that have been sitting out with no air
