Aged Tires: A Driving Hazard? (MUST READ)

great, just what i was looking for.

just one question, how often should be the tire change? does it depends on the thread? or years of driven?

Both.

In the past, for most in drivers replacing tires is usually when the tires are worn out.

But now another consideration to take is the number of years since manufacturing. So if the tire has sat around for 6 or 7 years at the gas station or tire shop, that tire is unsafe even though its brand new. Essentially, tires have a shelf life or expiration like food.

yea i understand that, i just checked all my tires for my car and thank god its made a year before the car was manufactured.
 
I just bought some craigslist tires for my nissan and was glad they were 08. I am running my origional 04 spare on the back of my 4runner and picked up a 06 spare on craigslist. Its made in japan and I do not see the mfg date? maybe on the inside?

It should be with the DOT code, the last group of numbers (last 4 digits in the form of week# and year, WWYY).
 
Interesting. Mine was hidden on the inside, like they said, but the tires are plenty new-- 0907 and 2707. I'll watch out for those numbers when I'm buying new tires.
 
smaller tires any disavantage?

Is there any downside to smaller tires?

I have a set of Goodyear Wrangler's 31X10.80 R16 on my 1994 4Runner SR5 4WD. You can see small cracks in the groove between the tread.
I am thinking of swapping them out for a set of Michelin LTX P225/75 R15's that I know are only a few years old with good tread.

I commute short distances, tow a small bass boat and run deflated on the beach when I surf fish.

Smaller tire equals less load capacity (with same tire type).

What tire size is on the door sticker?
 
Waaoo, I would've never thought of that, now I know why so much tire threads down the highway. I'll definitely keep both eyes on the mfg year next time I buy.
 
So glad that I watched this! Checked my tires after the video and came to find out they were made the 7th week of 2001 D: Guess it's time to get some new tires before I take the kids out anymore! Mfg dates are a must check now!
