Air Circulation Button

One thing I really like about the 4Runner's recirc is that you can drive behind the most exhaust-spewing vehicle in the world and as long as you have the windows up and the recirc on, you won't get even a hint of fumes in the cabin. Most other vehicles still allow a small amount of outside air in the cabin when the recirc is on.

Now all they have to do is make the system smart like the Infiniti recirc system. Some Infinitis use a sensor to detect fumes and automatically turn on recirc before the fumes have a chance to enter the cabin. That's a nice feature!

Air circulation problem

Are you trying to circulate "fresh" air from outside or trying to "recirculate" inside air?

I had problems turning off the compressor on the AC and letting in fresh air until I figured it out.

Actually, it happens both ways on my 4th gen. The other day I turned my recirc on as I was warming up in the garage and I didn't want to smell the exhaust fumes. A few minutes later I noticed the recirc had turned off when I caught a whiff of some fumes coming from a bus in front of me.

Other times, I've turned it off and it just comes back on by itself. I ne ver really understood how or why it does what it does.

On the 4th, I've found it's due to the temperature setting. If the exterior temp is higher than the desired temp inside it'll put in recirculating.

On the 4th Gen there is definitely something that senses air quality. In the Fall I had a radiator leak that had coolant misting in the engine bay - the recirc light came on and refused to let me allow that air into the cabin, which was the first warning I had there was something was up.

I have been getting really annoyed since the temperature dropped and I started using the heater on my TE for the first time and noticed that even after I manually push the Re-circulation button, it turns itself off and sucks in dirty ass outside air. It also does this when the fan is off. I will be driving along and feel the cabin temp going up and look down adn sure enough the fan is off but the recirc is open (not illuminated) and its blowing the hot air in. Really abnnoying.

Come on Toyota. Just another nit picking annoyance.

Seems to vary with the relative humidity. It will barely stay on for a few minutes in the snow or rain but will stay on practically forever in the dry desert.

My 4runner does the same thing. I will try to press the buton for 3 seconds and see if that works.

Bringing this thread back to life.

I was in Death Valley and finally experienced this. Thought it was my cabin filter being dirty, so I picked up a new one. Thought it fixed it but the button still won't stay on.

Now the desert was extremely dry and I turned it on to not suck dust in, so the humidity idea isn't my problem.

Any fixes yet? [MENTION=66389]BlackWorksInc[/MENTION] help us please.

You guys know that if you turn on the defroster mode it will turn off recirculate right? I have not seen my T4R turn off recirculate unless I'm changing some setting on the climate control...

I'll have to keep an eye on it to see if it doesn't change....

I thought the same thing...turning on recirculation mode would help keep dust out of the cabin. However it turns out that I was wrong, and Toyota suggests keeping it off for very dusty conditions. I made a post a while back that I can't fond at the moment, but I think that it may even be in the manual. My guess would be that it has something to do with maintaining positive air pressure in the cabin and allowing the filter to do its job. I may be way off here, but I remember being very wrong in my thinking on this subject. I will try to find my post because the responder linked the manual if I remember correctly.

Mike- like others have posted in this thread, if you press and hold the recirc button for about 5 seconds it will stay on until you turn the truck off.

It works!
