Air freshener vs. activated carbon cabin air filter?

Kind of an odd question, but will an activated carbon cabin air filter "cancel out" the scent put off by an air freshener?

I use both. When the air isn't circulating, the air freshner seeps throughout the vehicle. Once the a/c is on, the air circulates you won't smell it much anymore unless it's on your vents.
