Airbag Sensor Assembly aka SRS/Airbag Module replacement

SRS light is flashing. Pulled the code, B0136/74: LH squib, airbag sensor assembly, wire harness.

Followed trouble shooting guide in FSM. Squib checked out and LH harness checked out, that leaves the main module.

Local dealer service dept. says the mdoules are VIN specific and have to be programmed to your specific vehicle, and that they wont program used ones, only a new one they sell you. They transferred me to their parts dept. and the guy says the part (89170-35090) is discontinued, none anywhere in the country according to their computer system.

safetystore.com said that they just re-set them so if my issue is due to a malfunction in the module, their service wont fix the issue, and they cant re-program them.

myairbags.com has one that says tests good but you need to take to a dealer to program to your specific VIN.

Searched that part number on here and only came up on two part-outs from 2014 & 2017.

I'm at a loss.

Suggestions, opinions? The "good, used" model is $20, so I guess I'll give it a shot, but if it doesnt work because it isnt programmed, I'll be back at square one.

TLDR; module is bad, new ones have to be programmed, dealer wont program used, only new; no new available. :frusty::frusty::frusty:

I’m having same issue and have code 74 blinking. Any troubleshooting help would be greatly appreciated. TIA!
 
You can pull the codes by using jumper wires and the diagnostic port under the hood. It is all found in the service manual.

My issue has been that everything I have done has not fixed the issue....

Ok. This has to be a major bummer. So I would ask the Toyota dealership what do they do when one of these roll in to be repaired and no new ones can be bought?

They have to be reflashing used ones or the a replacement part number has to be available.

They certainly arent telling their customers tough crap nothing can be done with safety equipment like seat belts or airbags.


Do you try a few dealerships in your area? Maybe you just getting the runaround because you didn't take it there for service.

I called a couple of dealers and the part number is unavailable. They said they would not use or flash a used module, only install new, which they could not get.

I plan to do more diagnostics and mock up a new harness to completely bypass the one in the vehicle for the squib and narrow down where the issue is.
 
I'm curious about a fix on the airbag ecu also. I know it can be done, a friend of mines proved it.
01 taco srs steady light on. His brother pulled the codes and confirmed srs ecu. I researched the part numbers and told him no new ecu's available from Toyota, and Toyota only flashes new ecu's.
Well 8 hrs later at an independent shop and his srs light was off and fixed. He's not mechanically inclined so he doen't know what the shop did and couldn't report back to me. Wonder is the independent shop used Tech stream to program a used srs ecu?
I would like to know how to fix this if mines go bad.

They have a recall on the takata airbags.

Air bag issues are like selt belts. Major safty concern if not working.

I searched and no recalls for my VIN came up.

I got a refurb SRS ECU but the bolts on mine wouldn't budge. I rounded off my torx socket, just recently got a new one LOL

If this was fixed under a recall though that would be awesome!

Well no recalls exists for it then. You may have to drill the heads off to get your old one off then use voice grips etc to get those bolts out.

I just find it hard to believe that reprogramming isnt an option anyone. Has to be a reason.

metallitera, did you ever resolve this issue? I think the module in my 1997 has gone bad as well and I'm not sure if ordering a used replacement is worth rolling the dice on if I can't get it reprogrammed for my VIN.

My friend had a 98 that had deployed airbags and swapped the module from a 97-98. He replaced the airbags and replaced the module and the light never came back on.

Yeah I have recalled takata sensors. No dash warning though. I get a letter in the mail every week telling me to urgently get to the dealer for replacement. They are definitely defective after hitting a giant stump and smashing my face into the wheel. I don't really give a sh1t though about an airbag.

Must not have never been in a head-on collision yet. I was in 2015 in a 1991 camry. I wouldn't have hit my head if the ride had airbags. :)
