AISIN Manual locking hubs

oh well yea i beleive its them. only way to get the kits now is if you can track down a used set, but thats once in a blue moon cause the last one i saw sell was cause the guy sas'd his tundra.

You don't have to anything with the electric system or the stock ADD system on the front axle. I am installing this on my Limited and it will work fine. The only issue is that if the hubs are unlock, the AWD button will cease to function - Actually, the 4runner will not even drive, all the drive power will go to the front diff and just spin around.

lol, my "awd" doesnt work now lol- so would i have to just leave the hubs locked all the time?

I am not sure why your AWD doesn't work, but my plan is to keep them unlocked most of the time. During the the time of fore-casted inclement weather, I will go ahead and lock them up and let the original ADD do its job. Then when conditions permit, i can hit the AWD button or go ahead and throw it in 4HI.

I know it sounds like I am going backwards in technology but by doing the conversion, I can save wear and tear of my front axles and diff, maybe save a little bit gas mileage, free up a little bit of wheel horsepower, and nullify a potential source of vibration in the front end.

I have all the parts to do this, but have been too busy to get to it. Hopefully your thread will motivate me to get my act together and get that and my LBJ's done:bravo:

That's how I do it.

You got the axle hub out with a puller? When I did mine on the Tacoma it took a 40 ton press to get it out....You must have some massive arms and strength...LOL Nice job...

The second spindle is giving me heck!

I am using a 7-ton Craftsman puller to push the spindle out and I have broke the same one twice. I broke one side then turned it around and broke the other side. Check em out. Instead of having a curve to them, they have straightened out.

Off to Sears to exchange them out under the lifetime warranty.

They take a lot of pressure to get them out and if I remember correctly it takes even more pressure to get the bearings out...Good luck...

In the very few write-up's I've seen on this mod, this is where guys have opted to pay a dealer or machine shop to do the press work. I'm told it's a real PITA.

The FSM says it a tool and not a press to seperate it.

The first one came right apart. Pushing the bearings was no problem. Just freeing a bearing that has been stuck on the spindle for 15 years was the struggle.

I read that a while ago. Not very informative on how they set up the press to push the spindle out.

I am trying to do this conversion on the cheap. I got the Aisin Hubs, spindles, knuckles and axles (half shafts) for $120. I bought new bearings, seals and gaskets for another $140 (that is funny that i spent more for the bearings then I did then for all the front in pieces) . I spent another $22 for the Spindle lock nut tool.

This is all that i tied up in the conversion. I hope not to have to pay some one to push the spindles out.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the whole "fight" just to get the ABS ring off then on?
That was sort of the reason I posted that thread. I couldn't care less about having ABS, but for the fact that I'd still like to have a speedometer. I'm almost positive that Scotty put a sensor to his tranny to get his speedo back. If this is the case, then for me, it seems I can just swap all the taco parts over and be done with it.

In a sense, the whole fight is the ABS. The ring will push off with no problems. The Knuckles that I have is from a Tacoma that did not have abs. The Knuckles aren't drilled for the ABS hall sensor so they will have to switched out for the 4runners Knuckles already set up for ABS. If I didn't want ABS, all I would have done is just swap my 4Runner's knuckles for with the Tacoma knuckles and be done with it.

FYI - I think the Speedometer will work without the abs hooked up. I have never tried it, but it should be able to get speed signal from the rear ABS senors. It would be an easy enough test to do. Just unplug the front ABS senors on the inner wheel fenders and take it for a test ride. ABS light should come on and the speedo should still work.

That works great for me then. I'll ditch the ABS and just swap everything over. It's really not worth the fight or the money to me to keep ABS that I'm not a fan of anyhow.

I was able separate the second knuckle yesterday. I will not be able to complete the conversion because I need to order some parts. I thought that I would be able to reuse the outer hub seals but they were and get destroyed while pushing the bearing out of the spindle.
