ajohnson's 85 build

I have heard you can put the IFS lockouts in, but I'm not sure if that's true, or what is required if so.

The SA dial has raised "levers", where the IFS dial is flat across the face, but they are essentially the same. The dial housings are the same. I'll get another pic this evening to show what I mean.

And just to be clear, I am only referring to the dials themselves, not the entire hub. Since you are doing a SAS, you can swap entire IFS hub assemblies onto your SA (adds 1.5" each side) to match the width of your IFS rear axle and avoid wheel spacers.

I wouldn't mind going ahead and doing that to be honest. I know longfield sells the hub gear to use the IFS hubs on the solid axle, I guess I would need to pick those up with a set of IFS hubs to get it all working?

That's cool, I'd never heard of that. Those longfield hub gears aren't cheap, though.

I cant remember exactly what all you need for the swap, you can find info on Pirate. I'll take a look this evening.

I spent friday painting the rest of my parts and was ready for reassembly, working outside in a t-shirt. Saturday it snowed almost all day but didn't start sticking 'til 5:30 pm. So today I worked on my lights. I put my Hella 500 fogs up front, and converted my 500 driving beams to 55w HID. Not sure where I am going to mount them yet.

And dressed up my crossmember

I hope my dual cases finally ship this week, or I am going to be pretty pissed off.

Man this rig keeps getting better and better. keep it up

Thanks. I finally worked on it some more yesterday. Grinding the knuckle balls to clearance for the Longfields. Mine seemed to need a lot of grinding just behind the trunnion pockets, still have a little more to go but I ran out of time.

Yesterday I started putting the front back together. I got the driver side knuckle bearing preload set, repacked the wheel bearings and finally got everything on down to the hub body, but I can't get the C clip to snap in the groove in the end of the axle :frusty:. I'll do the passenger side today and see what happens.

So I go outside and decide to give it another shot on that C clip. I grabbed the bolt in the axle with my channel locks and just touched the clip with a screw driver and it snapped right in :bluejump:. I have the passenger knuckle set now and ready to go back together. Time for a coffee break.

Finally got it done

Now I need to plumb the air locker, wire the compressor, bleed the brakes, wire up the new lights. Oh and I'm STILL waiting on my dual cases :moping:

Quality work man! Love the paint scheme

I love the stickers on the skid plate! Prime scratch spot! Cant wait to see pics of them all scratched up!

Alot of grinding on behind the trunnion could mean the axle is a tiny bit bent. Maybe time for the knuckle gussets?

Thanks dude. I do need some knuckle gussets. A bent housing would make it very difficult to get the shafts in at all, which I had no problem with.

I wrestled with those c-clips too. I need a better set of snap ring pliers!

Marlin pliers! I dont know why that one clip would not pop in, I guess I was tired and out of patience.
