Change seal thickness. I was gonna use a late model 22re seal, like a 94. They are smaller with a different seal lip location, so I don't have to mess with a sleeve.

But now I am worrying that my timing chain cover is the culprit. With that much oil up top, around the front of the head where it meets the chain cover. If the crank seal is causing the leak, there should be oil sprayed all over the engine compartment which is not my case. I was going to replace the motor next winter so I really hate to mess with the timing chain cover :doh:

My leaking crank seal put oil all over the alternator and AC compressor, up on the underside of the rad hoses, all over the place really.

I'd replace the crank seal and see what happens. If you are leaking from the cover, maybe just snugging up the bolts would help? If worse comes to worse, it's really not that huge a deal to pull it and regasket it. I've gotten a lot of practice recently, and you don't have to pull the head.

Ok, I'll try tightening the bolts and just replacing the crank seal. I really hope that will stop it. If not I'll just let it ride so I can make the next wheeling trip in 2 weeks, and pull the cover after that. I appreciate the help mang.

I am picking up an oil pump o ring and front oil seal tomorrow. Today I got the oil pump and alternator off. I got the Trail Gear GM alternator brackets and Powermaster 12si alternator bolted in, and hooked up the wiring. I still need to run a new wire to the battery.

I got everything bolted back together lastnight. Brought some fresh oil home today, filled her up and cranked it up. I found a couple bolts leaking on the water pump, and oil seeping out the top of the water pump so I tightened those down. Had to retighten a bolt on the bottom of the oil pump, and everything looks pretty good now. I would say 96.3% leak free. It is seeping where the timing chain cover meets the cylinder head but not enough to bother me at this point.


I turned some lights on and the GM alternator seems to do a much better job. I will try to get a volt meter on it to see exactly what it is doing.

The alternator is pumping 14.13v @ idle with every single light and the stereo on. The Yota's and I are ready for the mountains this weekend.

I moved it and stood my spare up next to the roll bar, and stood the Hi-Lift up on the other side against the roll bar at an angle, but I want to put it back up there and figure a different spot for the spare.

Thanks! I really love my 'Yota's. It would be nice to have a Tundra sometimes but I love the Tacoma.

I had a great time wheeling this weekend. Tacomas do pretty damn good on the trail's, its like they have the perfect wheel-base. This is a great bunch to hang out with. 3 guys from VA, 1 from SC and few good 'ole NC boys

Yes sir! I get jealous of the left coast wheeling, but we have some really good rocky climbs over here. It is definately enough to shatter a Jeep u-joint :laugh:

No this broken heep was on daniel, just past the first ledge next to the tree. Then some idiot dirt bikers came through and one of them fell over before he even started the climb. That was a good show but they pissed me the **** off by riding off the trail :rockthrow:
