Akebono ProACT Ceramic vs Factory OEM Break Pads

I like them as well, dust is NIL and bite and feel improved over OEM. Put them on front , reused oem rotors, no complaints whatsoever.
+1 would use em again no prolema

Out of curiosity, when you say OEM are you referring to the factory OEM or the lower cost OEM brake pads?

I’ve heard many good things about the Akebono break pads. Even the Car Care Nut guy gives them a thumbs up. Has you used these on your 4Runner? What are your thoughts?

For clarification I’m not looking for high performance brakes pads. I’m curious if the Akebono provides better breaking but still has a similar performance as the factory OEM brake pads.

One thing I can say about the OEM pads is current rear pads are down to about 15% and the rotors still feel smooth.

Thank you. Yes I’m aware of this. With performance pads you have much better stopping power, however with the trade off is usually a shorter life span and more brake dust.

I don't think this is the case, I had them on a explorer years ago and performed very low dust. Didn't keep the vehicle to confirm the life span.
All I know is they are better in every way than the ProAct, also more expensive, not by much thou.

Edit: I just rembered 1 drawback, pedal feel. With the ProAct the pedal felt very firm, with the performance pads you would lose some of that firmness, so you would have a bit of soft brake pedal but more initial bite.

I installed Akebono ceramic pads on the front and back of my at the time wife's 4runner. They don't seem to have a lot of dust and they stop better than the Raybestos pads I put on my Xterra.

I bought Akebono pads through RockAuto. They sell TWO DIFFERENT Akebono products, so be careful!!

The ProACT ceramic are categorized for "Daily Driver". I did not buy these.

The ASP Performance ceramic are categorized as "High Performance. I bought these.

My (2021 Canadian TRD Off Road) 4Runner came with OEM Advics pads directly from Tahara, Japan, with Friction Code FG.

Th ASP Performance (ASP606A rear, ASP976 front) were labelled with Friction Code GG.

My early driving does give me the expected (and desired) better Cold Bite (250-degree and lower). Less of the stock spongy feeling too, which wasn't expected. And since the Hot 'G' is the same, I expect all 650-degree and hotter braking to be the same.

So, in the first few minutes, I'm a happy camper. The Akebono ASP performance ceramic pads are giving me exactly what I wanted.

(Other data for later Googlers:
- my rear brake pads wore faster than the front pads
- in 50,000km I had only 2mm remaining on rear pads ... clearly time to change!)
- I drove these 50,000km in 3 years, much of it city-driving)

Are you all saying that some pads had bad stopping power? meaning that I will not be able to stop as intended with such pads and got into collision? Right?

I just went with Raybestos Element3, and they're amazing. The stopping power is noticeable from OEM pads. My rotors were still in good shape so I'm holding off on replacing them, but I have my eyes on the Raybestos R-300 front and rear.

Everything is still really good: pedal-feel is higher and firmer than the stock Advics pads (still not sure why this is the case, but I'm enjoying it).

Cold-bite continues to be the same: the friction-code 'G' has not faded or changed, and because the pedal-feel is improved I feel that brake-modulation is better (but truthfully I can't remember complaining about the stock brake-modulation).

The hardware all fit fine. I did fumble a bit during installation with one of the front-pads, and I knocked the backside shim off... but I re-positioned and lightly re-crimped the little fingers to hold it back on.

I'm getting lazy these days, and I haven't noticed any sort of dust-buildup on my wheels. I'm only washing maybe monthly these days... and I am using brake-dust-coloured aftermarket rims, which surely helps

So, a few months in, and a few thousand km's on the ASP pads, I remain happy.

Anyone know the difference between ACT606 and ACT606A pads? Which ones are compatible with the rears on a 5th gen?

Raybestos R-300 slotted is what I use. AC Delco has the same R-300 slotted, so they must be made by the same manufacturer. I also use the top of the line Raybestos ceramic pads.
