trailer build...

Love this thread.

Not to derail the conversation you guys are having, but anyone every build their own trailer?

I have a couple of big trips planned out, but no exact start dates set unfortunately. As I was planning them, I started doing more and more research on adventure trailers. They seem like they would incredibly helpful. Being able to put a RTT, water, fuel, all of my cooking stuff, solar, and a table all in the trailer and just leave it at a campsite when I want to explore sounds awesome.

Anyone ever build their own??

Adventure trailers and their usefulness depend on the amount of movements you make during your trip. For most Americans, it's common place to drive all day, then camp at a site for a couple of days, then get moving again. In this sense, a trailer makes total sense. For those who move from point to point daily with no extended stay locations, a trailer takes more time to set up and tear down than it's worth. Just something to consider.

Yea, I'm leaning towards the Frontrunner, cost and side to side rack instead of front to back. I avoided them before because of the drilling required. But I'm not getting rid of the 4Runner until it's dead so, what's a few more holes!

Both are great options and a bonus, they both use 6 & 8mm slots so some accessories are interchangeable. I actually use the frontrunner RTT mounts on my K9

Totally agree. I am in the process of finishing up planning the route for a 3,500 mile trip around Canada, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. Camping trailers can definitely be a hinderance at some points, but I think the ability to leave it at a camp for 2 days while exploring, carry extra water, fuel and supplies, and basically make it a separate "home" outweigh most of the cons for me.

Yea I've been reading through tons of stuff on ExPo. The trailer builds are awesome.

And dang son, that trailer is freakin huge! While I would love a trailer that big for some luxury living, I'm trying to keep my trailer down to 1000-1500 lbs dry. But thanks for the link!

Is the spacing of the slats on the K9 and Frontrunner racks the same? I was looking at the Frontrunner propane tank mount but wasn't sure if it would fit the K9 rack.

As you probably know, the K9 top slats run from front to back of vehicle and the frontrunner side to side of the vehicle. Now the bottom of the K9 rack runs side to side so looking at the propane bracket, you might be able to fit it using those slats. However to be sure, we would need some measurements of the spacing on the 8mm slats on the Frontrunner....I have the K9 so anybody out there with Frontrunner, please feel free to chime in.

I'll be at my go to store tomorrow having some work done and they are a Frontrunner vendor so maybe I can get you a better answer.....

Ok here is a small contribution if you have a rack that has 8mm and 6mm mounting slots that will save you some money if you tie down a lot of stuff on the rack. For the K9 and Frontrunner, I believe the eye nut kits are around 10 bucks or so for a pair of 8mm. You can make your own so much cheaper

That'd be cool if you get a chance to measure a rack there. Frontrunner is 45 mins from my parent's house which is about 5 hours away from me. Was planning on hitting them up next time I'm in the area.

Do my best to measure a 5th Gen rack or the propane brackets if available...

Here are the Frontrunner measurements...

Slat width: ~9cm (90mm)

Spacing: ~11cm (100mm)

The 2cm difference is likely for extra slats to be added into the space to create a full flat surface.

Slat thickness is 2cm (20mm)

Total slat width 13cm
7cm between slat channels
9cm between slats
13.5cm between 1 slat channel to nearest channel on next slat



Based on our measurements, looks like any frontrunner bracket that is designed to mount across slats spans ~19cm and wouldn't be able to mount in the same manner on a K9 rack. On a K9 rack, the bracket would need to be mounted on the same slat front to back.
