Alternative winch mount bumper design

Looks really clean. I like the near stock look, and the advantage over the Budbuilt plate is the addition of the front D ring mounting points.

The D-Rings caught my eye immediately!

Why not just a hidden mount? It weighs less than half as much, too.

The weight would be less with a hidden hitch but I think we might have a slight advantage with the D-Ring set up in the Tacoma pictures. I could be wrong saying this since we haven't seen a mock up or a design for the 4Runner yet but, reviewing the install PDF for the Tacoma, I would feel better about using those D-Ring connection points verses using the hidden hitch set up. Shoot, wouldn't it be really nice if a front mount hitch could be designed in to this setup so we get a hidden hitch, winch, and D-Ring connections ALL-IN-ONE?

It also offers a little more protection vs a hidden hitch. Obviously, not the same as a full bumper, but there is some real protection. It's possible a center hoop or maybe even a hitch receiver could be added to the design (space is really limited for the hitch receiver on the Tacoma.)

The design also lends itself well to adding some additional LED lighting (as do other designs).

If he can get it to look as clean on the 4runner as it looks on the tacoma, i will be interested in buying one.
I just wonder what will need to be cut out and removed, i have a TE. I think it would blend right in with all the lines.

Ok. I hear you guys. Let's start here. I'll preface this with it's impossible to design by committee but you can bet I'll take in to consideration what you guys are looking for, just as we did on the Tacos.

Obviously I can apply some Googlefu to research this but what's the breakdown on changes to the nose/bumper cover by years starting around 2005 or so. For example, The Tacoma was unchanged in that regard from 2005 to 2011 and now from 2012 to current.

5th Gen 10-13
5.5th Gen Redesign 14+

I'd likely build for 10-13 and 14+ up...and probably 14+ first.

Example:
The 06-07 is very similar visually, and I wonder if not the same in regards to what we are working with, to the 05-11 Taco.

Are you looking for bash protection or something similar to a normal sheetmetal bumper?

I assume most want recovery points.

Winch mounting obviously.

Light tabs most likely.

I'm certainly interested in feedback.

I agree with this, except its pure stupidity to start w/ '14+ model years, clearly the market is largest for the '10-'13 model years....

I cannot speak for the 2010-13 crowd, but visually the 2014 SR5 and Trail nose is a couple inches further extended forward. I haven't looked close at a 2014 Limited, but from what glances I have seen of them it almost looks like they stuck with the previous years nose. Someone else will have to chime in on that.

In the new SR5 and Trail versions the aluminum bumper only extends to the width of the frame rails, with what looks like 2" steel square tube extensions going out another 8 - 10" on either side. I'm willing to bet the frame mounting points are identical, but everything forward of there will be different from the 10-13.

I personally am looking for something along the lines of a central bumper/winch plate and functional skid plate that would replace the area where the 2014 Trail/SR5 have that central piece of plastic. The recovery points would be nice obviously. I really like the looks of your Taco mount that started this thread and something along those lines is what I'm looking for. A Bull Bar type loop would be nice, but not a deal breaker.

And I understand Canazes9's point about there being a lot more of the 10-13 models out there. But it's nice to see someone thinking about the 2014s. I would definitely be interested in something like presented in that first picture for my 2014 Trail.

Here's a picture of my 2014 in front of hrod79's 2010 to give you some idea of the nose differences. I know the angle isn't very good, but the difference is still pretty obvious.

Here you go USOffroad. Below is a 2014 Trail/SR5 nose. The silver center plate is removable. Silver on the Trail, color matched on the SR5. Below that is a stock picture of the 2014 Limited, which looks to have an entirely different lower half shell (from the headlights down). On the bottom is KTMRIDER's 2013 (10-13 nose) borrowed from page 2. The hardware underneath may be similar, but blending a mount into what is 3 different noses is going to be a challenge.

Off Topic for a minute:
Actually I posted this pic because we have been scheming a way to bring the satoshi grille mod to the owners of 2014+ 4Runners. I asked [MENTION=102156]USOffRoad[/MENTION] to make a thin metal "sleeve" that will conform to the painted bar that separates the upper and lower grille of the 2014+ SR5's and the TE's. This "sleeve" will cover the Toyota Emblem cutout in that bar and will be a perfect place to then put the 4Runner logo mounted just like the TRD Pro 4Runners have. Just an idea.
