If you are having charging issues and suspect the alternator is faulty or have 150k+ miles I highly recommend doing this. Definitely a straight forward DIY repair. Took me about an hour start to finish.

My truck has 180k miles and I suspect the original DENSO alternator. My brushes were worn bad and gummed up with crud making for a very poor connection resulting in a no charging condition and the battery light on.

Saved about $120 bucks swapping out the brush assembly instead of buying a rebuilt alternator. And used EOM Toyota parts, win win!

I’ve already had to replace the brush assembly on a 4 year old reman Alt from CarQuest. Which was my backup

Pro Tip:
The one other thing I would add is I removed my battery completely which made access to the alternator and the connectors much easier.

The next time. I need alt brushes I think I going to try to rebuild my denso. I never tried to rebuild an alternator. Looks like not a hard project at all. Thanks for sharing. :]

When you pulled the brush holder, did you actually take the brushes out? Just curious how they go back in. Would you have to solder them? The only part available for my 98 was just the carbon brushes and wires that are attached, not the whole assembly like in Tim's video.

You need to order a brush assembly from Toyota or Denso’s website.

Thanks! I was trying to get it from a dealer and all they offered were the actual brushes, not the assembly.

This I think is the number for the 70a Alt.

The first two numbers are the 1) Toyota Alt part number. 2) the Denso Alt part number.

The last number is the brush assembly.
