All 4Runners ever built were built completely in Japan. From the very first one in the 80's to today.

Here's what ya do...take some time alone with your vehicle and a few beers...wash her good inside and out, then put on a good wax, talk to her, drive her a little and fall back in love with her.
Ignore the new girl on the block because she is all looks, the motor in your garage is still running strong and will give you all you need and more in the years to come.

Totally agree, they cost cut the 5th gen to keep the profit margin, little things like the fuel filler door and the antenna, and who knows what non visible parts.

Exactly, why acquire new debt when you can get a lot of mods and pay the difference in gas for a long time with $17,000. Get a lift, some new tires, HIDs, a new head unit and you'll still have tons of money left over.
I'd keep it. Spend a little money and fix up whatever- you'll like it even more.
I have an '08 and would never go to a 5th gen and loose the V8 (the reason I got a 4runner to begin with) and full time 4x4.
What mods do you have currently? Maybe some spidertrax spacers, new tires, new stereo with navigation or something will make you like it even more.
Get your truck professionally detailed- it'll feel like new again inside.

Take the test drive, if you cannt live with out the gen 5 buy it. If not take a once in a life time hunting trip and remeber it OR in vest /save it and plan on retiring early save all you can and enjoy it later, no young kids just you the bride and a new gun life is good.

You might be the first person on the forum to dump a 5th gen to get back into a 4th gen.
Did you get crushed financially when you dumped the 5th gen?

Wow… I guess that confirms that there was a “regress” and a lot of wrong "updates" when Toyota came out with 5th gen… I do not remember ever seeing someone going from 4th to 3rd or from 3rd to 2nd or from 2nd to 1st generations unless they were building a strictly off-road rig or were completely discussed with 3.0 V6 (aka 3.slow) engine.
True, but keep in mind that most people have a huge financial incentive to NOT dump a new vehicle in the first place. So I think you'd REALLY have to like the older vehicle a lot more if you're going to sell the new vehicle and take a bit hit financially.
If I owned a 5th gen and I really hated it, I'd probably just live with it for at least 3 years before I'd even think of selling it. But to sell it after one year is just insane, financially speaking.

I had a 2008 V8 4x4 totaled last year. I went shopping for a new 5th gen.. well. I ended up getting another 2008 4x4 V8. I was not impressed at all with the 5th gen. It seems they've regressed in quality and features. There's no torsen unless you get the Limited, there's no V8 at all, the rear hatch doesn't have the auto close (I know, more prone to breaking, but still a feature that they've pulled), No projector headlights (let alone they should have had HIDs by now, they should have been in the refresh for the 4th gen IMO), no LED tail lights, and personally I thought the car felt cheaper. The plastics seemed cheaper, the doors sounded tinnier when you closed em, the engine sounded like it was stressed, there seemed to be even less sound deadening material, there wasn't enough torque in the new and improved V6 to pull it up a hill with 3 people in it with any speed unless you red-lined it.
The only thing that I truly liked about the new 5th gen was the seating position. They were finally able to raise the seats off the floor enough that it made for a comfortable seating position.
And another nice feature in the limited was the keyless ignition and entry. It's nice touch, but again not nearly enough to sway me from a 4th gen with the V8, no where close...

I dumped a 2010 Sequoia to go back to a 4th gen. 4Runner. I actually lowered my payments big time and wasnt crushed, not even bruised or skinned! I'll have the '08 4Runner paid off in a little over a year, and im happy as a clam now.
Im thinkin' when the '09 leases start rolling in soon, i'll look for a gem for the wife! Keep the '03 and garage it...supe it up with some mods, etc.
