Am I safe towing a camper.

I'm sure this has been discussed before but I can't find a rate that people can agree on when I search. I just want to know if I will be safe towing a camper with a 3785 lb. rating and will it tear up my car. I don't plan to add more than a couple hundred lbs. to the car & trailer.

Yes, but you're going to want to install a brake controller for added safety. I tow a 3500lb 7x12 with my 3rd gen, with brakes, and it's tows very stable and brakes amazing. I have had no need for weight distribution hitch or sway control yet. My 906 rear springs level out perfectly when my trailer is attached. My tongue weight is 412lbs.

I have a Prodigy 2 brake controller and E2 WDH and sway control. The camper forum people are telling me my setup is unsafe or will trash the 4Runner. Still looking for experienced opinions. Thanks for your reply.
 
You'll be fine. Total weight a bit over 11000# trailer and TE. The trailer itself weighs 2500# empty. Towed from Yuma AZ to Cherry Point NC.

Mods I have are transmission cooler, Airlift 1000, EAZ-Lift weight distribution hitch, Reese electronic brake controller.

Just take your time and remember there is never a reason to rush while towing.

I tow about 3,800 lbs many times a year and probabky tow 200 miles each way to my destination. Don't have a trans cooler and it does just fine even with the highway that I take having a lot of hills. They have a trans cooler but it's the one that just flows into the radiator. Works but not for server driving/towing.
 
Boat weighed 4800ish# towing from Key West, FL to Yuma AZ. No tranny cooler, WDH, brake controller. It towed like a boat...

 
What bike are you working on? Yeah boats are nice if you live in a state like mine, Wisconsin. They do stand for Bust Out Another Thousand. Lol.
 
Has anyone done any analysis of whether a transmission cooler does anything on these vehicles?

They already have a fairly large transmission cooler in the stock radiator. It's not like a 1970's chevy with a single piece of hardline making a loop in front and back down.

I don't have any data either way - but my hunch is that the stock radiator for the transmission is more than adequate for towing everything the 4runner will pull. OTOH I could be completely wrong - I don't have any data to support either way.

So... has anyone actually measured transmission temps? Is an additional cooler necessary?
