Yep, it's all the fault of those "elitist" folks. No personal responsibility necessary. It's all everyone else's fault. The government is the only way things will get better...
Dude, right here in this country the poor people have it better than any other poor people in any other country in the world in our known history.
They have TONS of programs to better themselves, tons of money/assistance from the government provided by the folks who produce.
They can go to a church and ask for help. They can go door to do asking to do labor for trade for food or clothing.
There are endless possibilities.
Of course some folks are mentally or physically disabled and have issues with earning a livable wage and fitting into society- but there are tons of programs and churches and assistance out there for them.
It's as if I am supposed to feel bad- I came from a poor ass family. We worked our way out of it. Didn't make anyone deal with our issues but us.
No sob story, just hard work and keeping at it. Never asked for handouts- but always willing to work for an honest living or food or whatever.
If you are upset at the gap in livable wages and prosperity getting harder and harder to attain- look no further than the government for helping to create those conditions. Trade deals, sending jobs overseas, regulating/taxing business out of profitability, illegal alien labor tax credits for big biz, etc, etc, etc.
The lobbying going on in Washington is a big issue. Just look at how easy it is to buy and pay for a politician. Just fund them and then send them emails telling what you need done (Clinton/Soro's anyone?). Poof- it happens. Pork in legislation. The system is corrupt as FVCK. And until we clean house and make some changes, more government is just going to make the problems much much worse.
It's interesting that when we had less government interference people could live off of low incomes, but the more the gov grows, the less they can fend for themselves and the more they have to rely on the .gov. That's called a clue. A Red flag. It's almost as if the .gov wants to control people and make them reliant on the system. Go figure...
There are a lot of problems in this country and all most all of them can be tracked back to the fed.gov in some way, sure there are other players involved, but the fed.gov is holding the game board and dictating the rules.
The last half of your post I agree with. The first half, I think you mis-understood my tone (understandable in print). The elitist comment was a jab at the situation in general. Just a guy bemoaning how the price of anything good has gone up, but with a bit of truth behind it as well.
As for growing up poor, we weren't too well off either. Hell, the whole town was (still is) pretty poor. But I never went hungry, had clean clothes, and a roof over my head. Mom was able to save from the grocery budget throughout the year so us kids had something at Christmas. So I'm not gonna complain, lots of folks have it a lot worse than I did. But we didn't have any extra to squander either.
At this point in my life, I appreciate the hard worker who succeeds and becomes successful (as you and I have done). I too think personal responsibility is lacking in our society as a whole. But I don't think everyone is capable of going from nothing to something. It's hard. It takes guts and mental fortitude to do it. Even with that, a lot of people, despite working their ass off, still fail.
It's a deep problem with many variables. Are there some who are lazy, irresponsible, and have no desire to better themselves? Absolutely. Are there a good number who are depressed, confused, have no idea how to start digging out of the hole and feel overwhelmed and lost? Sure. And there are likely some who have failed repeatedly and simply given up.
