I drove a jeep in the dunes north of Corolla NC this past week. At 21k miles, the 2010 Wrangler had every light on, non functioning AC, and way too much play in the steering to be safe. It was definitely a Jeep. Sweet Christ on a pony, that was an awful ride. I got back in my 4runner and immediately decided on the list of things to be done to my runner in the next year (dual battery, compressor, rack, etc).

Gotta say this.....While I'm a big Toyota guy, I'm not a Jeep-hater. I'd personally rather have reliability than capability, but when it comes to off-roading/ rock crawling, you will never beat a Wrangler with a 5th gen 4runner. They're different vehicles with different design goals......Mod the 4runner all you want, it's apples to oranges.

BUT, I don't think that's the point of this thread. So, congrats Goyo on the beautiful new ride!:cheers:

Jeeps are what they are... I have loved every single one I have owned (5) but they just aren't family practical

THis was my latest Jeep... almost family practical but was a dog on the highway

depends on what the challenge is.

Speed (yes speed compared to Jeep lol) and comfort = 4 runner

maneuverability and overall off-road prowess = Jeep hands down

Having owned both I love the 4R much more but I have to agree that for purely off payment driving the Jeep will out perform in every way I can think of except for storage space. The trouble is that one needs to drive on roads to get off road and the Jeep is like riding a horse. I would have hated to drive two days to CO in a Jeep, for example.

Maybe the newer Wranglers are better, I don't know. I've also not kept up with the newer one's reliability.

I have NEVER had a real problem with a Jeep... all this talk of reliability issues is laughable. The older 4.0 you couldnt kill... the newer 3.8 adn penstar are gutless and have way too many electrical gizomos for my taste.... any real problem with a Jeep is cause by the owner or a result of hardcore USE... they are no less reliable that any other vehicle if you ask me. Once you pass the 150k mile mark I would give the edge to Toyota though.

I agree I prefer the 4 R though for comfort and performance on road... a 2k trip in a jeep sucks! lol.

JGC is a hunk of poo! I had an 06 and got rid of it in 3 months.... I am with you 100% on that

@Keemonrunnin: Not exactly sure what are you talking about, or who LOWRUNNER is, but in any case, as some folks mentioned, the intention was to tell a story, where back in the day us boys used to call any 4x4 a "Jeep". :biggrin2:

@ all the rest and about the Jeep debate:
I do not own one, and who knows, probably will not buy one...however, back in the day, and in many places of the world, the "Jeeps" were and still are in some cases, used as work-horses !

Good read Goyo! I began admiring Toyota trucks while watching Back to the Future! My first 4x4ing experience was in a (new at the time) FJ60. The drive scared the crap out of me, but that truck was a tank.
