Andy MOD 2.0 w/real TRAC Off Switch

I'm not sure I understand all the electronic nanny systems on my 2002, so correct me if I've got this wrong.

VSC - Stability control. It attempts to correct a slide by cutting power and selectively applying brakes to individual wheels. Probably fine to leave enabled on dry pavement, but can screw you up in the snow when a controlled slide may actually be what you want.

TRAC - Not a typical traction control, it's an electronic solution to open differentials that allow a slipping wheel to rob power from the other side of the axle. It will apply brakes to the wheel that is slipping, effectively transferring power back to the wheel with traction. Does not cut power, it simply tries to emulate a locked differential.

ABS - Typical anti-lock system, it just sucks.

So, if I have this right I'm not sure why you would want to disable TRAC. Possibly in extreme off-road situations?

I would like to be able to shut off VSC when I felt like it. And I feel that the ABS system is useless, so I'd like to kill that permanently. Can this Andy Mod 2.0 selectively defeat those systems? And would TRAC or VSC still work anyway if ABS was disabled, since they both use ABS sensors?

TRAC really helps when doing slow offroading, I.E. crawling, but when it comes to things like mud and sand you dont want any wheels getting stopped by brakes being applied even if they may be going faster than another wheel. It can be a real momentum killer,

as far as I know, you cant keep trac/vsc and kill the ABS since thats essentially what trac/vsc consist of other than pitch and yaw sensors

did you take any pictures of the wires you cut/spliced?...

did you try putting it back to the way it was before and see if it is fixed?

do you have a CEL???

No I don't have pics hopefully I get the 4Runner back today though and I will

I'm hoping I just did it backwards and I just need to swap the new wires

I was thinking I read about a mod that would leave the ABS on and simply fool it into never activating. Effectively disabling ABS without cutting power to the system. Could be wrong about that though, I figured if I just pulled the ABS fuse that it would disable TRAC and VSC too.

This one is like the one I have. There is a plug for it, but you need one to use it. You only need to use the outside pins, and the middle one is NOT used. The one I have is actually from an Avalon, but I'm pretty sure the link above is the same thing.

Regarding the OEM plug for the switch...did you mean "but you don't need to use it?"

Did you just use female disconnect terminals on the wires to the switch or go the OEM connector route? Part number for the plug if used?

You don't need it, but it does make things easier. I don't know the part number of the plug itself, but you can usually find these on eBay for pretty cheap.

If you can't find one you can use a female spade connector.

sorry to drag out an older thread.
I've got Andy mod 2.0 in progress. As I'm working with wiring under the dash, the red/black wire has broken off right at the plug... my first question is what is the best way to fix? I've found several sources saying there's a tool available to remove this wire. Where can I find another pin to reconnect a new wire into the harness. Second of all, before the wire broke I had everything hooked up but could not switch vsc on, it was stuck off. I made double sure every wire was making contact, and even bypassed the switch, still to no avail. Thoughts on this?

Hey guys, noobie with a first post here! i just followed and did this mod step by step but it didnt work for me. I thought maybe it was a faulty relay from autozone or maybe a bad trac switch from ebay so i got the multimeter to test things out. Come to find out i only have .3 volts coming out of the fuse slot that you used. I had to flip the add a fuse over and use the slot under that one. now it works great! thought this might help in case it didnt work for someone else. Thanks guys this site is awesome with endless information

Just did followed the OP's original post and it works great! I found that there is a difference between relays that have 2 87's and relays that have 1-87 and 1-87a. The difference is the 87a version works, the other does not! Thanks a bunch for this!!!!!!!

Dumb question, but I’m assuming the Scion trac off switch that looks just like the Avalon switch will work as well? They are much cheaper on eBay

Thanks MStudt! I have been experiencing a vsc/trac issue that was cutting out acceleration when starting from stop or during slow turns. My CEL came on along with the VSC & TRAC lights due to to bad O2 sensor(s) and the issue had disappeared. After replacing the sensors the issue re-appeared. Hopefully this will make things better until I am able to track down the cause of the problem.

This is just a quick write-up on the Andy MOD 2.0 using a real TRAC Off switch from a Toyota Avalon.


From here I used 86 as my power and 85 as my ground. My power is coming from an open spot on the fuse block under the dash on the drivers side. With the ground being directly below (picture shows it halfway cut off).


I have the main power from the fuse box running into the TRAC Off switch, and out to the relay (86). You can see the four wires all hooked up here.

I won't matter which way you wire the switch on this particular one.

I'm running two 15 amp fuses on mine, and that's overkill. You can place the add-a-fuse in a location that uses a 10 amp fuse, and you'll be fine.
