Another 2013 SR5 with ???

I have had my truck for a week and have a few questions that I am not sure about.

1. When I shut off engine there is a whine down noise. Like a turbine spooling down. I am pretty sure our trucks don't come with jet engines. With some research I think its the smog pump. I got this from the tacoma forum.

2. When I go from reverse to park there is a click and a slight movement of the shift lever. I read on a lexus and yaris forum this could be the parking pin engaging so the truck those not roll back.

3. I also have the slight shudder from 1st to 2nd when going slow. I read on here there was a TSB for early trucks. Is there any other 2013 on here having this issue?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

1. Could be smog, or evaporater, or fuel system or anything else that is pumping something and suddenly is not. I wouldn't worry.
2. Yes there is a click going to park. Again nothing to worry about.
3. I had the shudder on my 2011 and not on the 2012. I put over 50K miles on the 2011 with nary an issue. 99% of the time it never happened because it required a very specific condition (slow speed turn and shifting from 1st to 2nd) that was not met. When it did happen it gave just a little shudder then all was fine. I told my dealership about it, they checked and could not find the problem even though I replicated the condition for them during test drive. They gave me the option of replacing the transmission or just documenting it if there ever would be a problem in the future. I took the documentation route because 99% was fine and even when it did exhibit this condition it still was not earth shattering. And who is to say the new transmission would not do the same thing? Anyway over 50K miles later it was still just fine.

I don't know your vehicle ownership history but I do know modern vehicles make lots of noises when you think they shouldn't. For example you might be walking past your vehicle that has been sitting turned off for 6 hours and hear the fuel system whine. This is normal. Good luck and enjoy.

For 3, I have this shudder as well, but after an synthetic engine oil change on 5700mi, the shudder is nearly gone, I feel much better. I don't know why..

Just to tell you the oil change had nothing to do w/ your trans shudder, also remember you have to break everything in on a new vehicle. I wouldn't worry about a shudder until your check engine light comes on.

Thanks for the quick replies. I will just stay aware of the tranny and if it is persistent I will take it to the dealer.
As far as the post that got deleted. I can take a joke. But thanks Antman!!

This is the new Air injection system that finally made it's way to the 4R unfortunately, All US 13+ will have it from now on. Same system that has been on other model Toyota's for a few years now, only change is now when you shut off the engine their is a slight purge in the system going reverse to help keep water/moisture out that may have entered.

Yes, normal

Sorry for the late reply to the thread, but I was looking for answers regarding a couple of these issues specifically.

Recently purchased a 2013 SR5 and I am experiencing both #1 and #3.

As to the whirring noise when the ignition is killed, I have been told was the same/similar issue as NorthWest 4R stated above (air injection/emissions).

My transmission does shudder shifting between 1st and 2nd, more noticeably when accelerating slowly, but it is still somewhat noticeable when accelerating faster. No engine light, no slipping, just a hesitation/mild shudder that does not happen when it shifts between any other gears.

However, my odometer still hasn't broken 3K (km in Canada), so I'll keep an eye on it and see if it "self heals".

At least I'm not the only one :canada:

I have had my 2013 SR5 for a little over 1 week now, and experience a clunk/thud/looseness in the drive train intermittently when slowing to a stop, or starting from a stop. My 3rd gen with 100k miles did the exact same thing, but I figured it was just because it was old, and things had worn...

I am thinking it might be the driveshaft TSB talked about in this thread:

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/114053-toyota-issues-fix-axle-wrap-driveshaft-clunky-thumpy.html

Does that sound like what you are experiencing?

Yes, that sounds like it could be the issue.

After paying closer attention to it lately, the shudder/bump does seem to be coming from the rear, not the front end.

It is also happening a little when the truck downshifts from 2nd to 1st when decelerating, but not any other shifts.

Thanks for the info, I will have to call my dealership and ask them. Should still be under warranty at 1700 km :thumb:
