Another Bilstein 5100 question

Adjusting them causes the springs to preload which makes it ride firmer. It also lifts your vehicle causing the shock to extend out limiting the amount of down travel remaining. I ran mine at 0 and read several recommendations not to go over the 1.5 Mark as it would ride terrible.

You didn't read enough! There isn't a 1.5" setting!

so much wrong in this post. 5100s dont preload the coil it lifts the coil perch which does not change the coil rate like an "in coil" spacer would. 5100s feel the same at all settings the only thing that changes is the percieved "nose dive" when braking. the "harshness" people feel is just quality shocks on their rig after running shitty oem shocks.

mine are at 2.5" and it rides great.... the same as it did when I had it at .85" the first go around.

I know this old post but do you or ST1FLER happen to have pics of your alignment sheets by chance? I'm doing the 2.5/1.5 and found a good shop I think can get it done. I'd love to take them your sheets to prove a skilled tech can get it done. Thanks

I just asked Stifler and he doesnt have the sheet but is getting another alignment after he gets his new tires on and he will give me the spec sheet to post here

This post is so correct. Provided you're not against the bump stops, the spring will be compressed the exact same amount under load regardless of coil perch setting. There is no "preload". It has to be that way - it's the same spring supporting exactly the same weight, which means the compressed spring length will be the same.

What does change as you move the perch is how far you are from the bump stops. That can lead to perceived ride harshness if you are too close and are hitting the stops frequently. Many people then jump to the conclusion that the harshness is due to spring preload. Not so.
 
I've asked this before, but where should the 5100 be set to if I'm adding an OME 2" lift front coil? My 5100's are currently set to 1.75 & I would like at least a 2" or even the 2.5" setting but once I add the old man emu 2" coil... how much lift will I actually have?

I can't speak directly about the OME 2" front coils, but I know with 2" toytec/eibach front coils and the 5100's set to .85" setting people are getting anywhere from 3" to 3.25" of lift. Not sure if you wanna go much higher than that unless you are thinking about changing out a whole lot of other parts also.

Yeah I don't want 3". I want between 2" and 2.5" of front lift and I want to simultaneously upgrade my front coils. I already have 2" rear OME coils and I LOVE them. I'll ask my mechanic guy but regardless I'm sure it would just require playing with the different 5100 settings with the 2" coil installed and seeding what the results are...

Mine gave me exactly 2" up front with the 5100's set at 0. But I was also installing 885's to offset the extra weight from the slimline bumper and winch. So I might have gained more without the extra weight. I was running at 1.75" with factory springs before the bumper, and lost about 3/4" from the added weight. Hence my decision to go 885. They almost perfectly offset the estimated weight gained.

Total travel remains the same. As you set the Bilstein higher, available up travel (compression) increases, and down travel (extension) decreases. You are just moving the normal resting operating point within the fixed suspension range.

So that being said, a 2" lift coil would provide the most neutral performance with which 5100 setting? 1.75 since it's in between the higher and lower settings?

Soo many factors come into play when you're talking about travel.
The angle of your UCA's and LCA's are limiting factors also.
Having a lift on a stock suspension becomes sort of like "hiking with heels on".
Articulation will be reduced. Although the potential range of movement (Articulation) remains the same as stock, the useable range becomes decreased the more extreme you go.
Having the suspension (Struts LCA's, UCA's etc...) at it's neutral point is the best! Each wheel will remain on the ground with the maximum traction for the longest duration of articulation.

Makes sense. This is why I'm stoked to have upgraded coils on my front 5100's. I have 2" OME coils on my rear 5100's and I will be stoked to have the front equally as setup. Having only a 2" lift all around that is truly a suspension lift is absolutely perfect for my needs and obviously isn't pushing the limits of the rest of my drivetrain or suspension components. I'm thinking the 0.85 or 1.75 5100 setting would be best when installing the OME coils up front.

You're confusing me with this part. If you install 2" OME coils up front AND set the struts at .85 or 1.75, you will be ADDING those settings to the static 2" lift the springs already have. As in making it a 2.85" to 3.75" lift. Or am I missing something? :noidea:

Hahaha. This is why I asked my initial question. Until it was explained to me in the above posts - I couldn't wrap my mind around how much lift my truck would have with a 2" coil and a 5100 strut set to the various different height adjustments. I now see that regardless of where the 5100 is set, a 2" lift coil will provide 2" of lift to the truck & the 5100 setting will simply affect the preload or compression based on how much up or down travel the strut has.


Long story short I was thinking that none of the strut settings would change the 2" lift.


Now I have decided to proceed with the 883 OME front coils (which claim a 2" lift) & I will set my 5100's to the neutral 0" lift setting. This paired with my rear 895 OME coils and 5100's should give me a front and rear 2" lift all around.
